Watching the Patriots vs the Cowboys today. Cowboys are down but driving with 2 minutes and change left in the game. The stall at 4th and 1. But, of course, instead of trying to make one miserable yard, they go for a 50 yard field goal...which they miss badly. So, the Pats just have to get a first down or two to ice the game. So, they have their rookie QB throw a dangerous pass over the middle which gets intercepted for a pick 6 putting Dallas in control. Game over right? The Pats QB hauls off and throws 50 yards down the field as two Cowboy DBs, who would seem to have the Pats' WR locked up, totally blow the coverage allowing the Pats to take the lead with around 2 minutes to go. Despite themselves, the Cowboys go on to win in OT when the Pats choose to punt from midfield on a 4th and 3. And we are shaking our heads...

Do they also get to have a losing overall record and even worse conference record and keep their jobs after 6 seasons?

Belichick is 2 - 4 at the moment. Do you think he is in danger of losing his job? I don't know about the Dallas guy. He looked like a brain dead beached whale.

Mike McCarthy is known as one of the worst clock/game managers in football.

Bill Belichick has more super bowl rings than he does losing seasons. kind of different compared to DB
But, you are making my point. Belichick should have known not to have his rookie QB throw that pass and he should have known not to punt given the over time rules in the NFL.

Yeah I also lost my fantasy matchup this week on Lamb's walk off TD, so that was cool.

Bill gets the benefit of the doubt, Dino should not because he hasn’t done a damn thing to deserve it. He’s continuously made the wrong decision over and over again.

Sorry. I forgot DB has the previous record at SU that belichick has.

Am I really having to point this out.

Most coaches overthink crap. It just doesn’t get noticed or remembered unless a game comes down to a few plays.

No, I think you’re making everyone else’s point. Great coaches make mistakes sometimes. Mediocre coaches make mistakes all the time.

That’s why he wins Super Bowls. The other team sells out against the run. If you want to win, you have to pass the ball and do the semi risky thing.

Urban was fortunate to get the win despite some boneheaded decisions.

Yeah and the Cowboys better not let Kellen Moore go just to keep that clown. See SP…

It would never happen, but they’d be better off letting mike go and letting kellen run the show.

The difference is the NFL is organized to give the worst teams the best chances to improve. The salary cap ensures the best players can't just play for the wealthiest team and the worst teams get first crack at drafting the best talent. Talent is much more evenly spread. Explain that to your friend.

Fans criticize a play call after the outcome ends poorly. They never criticize play calls that end well.

It’s rather idiotic when you think about it.

I'm not really sure which decision(s) you're criticizing? Are you criticizing Belichick for being conservative or being aggressive, because you gave an example of each. When coaches are aggressive and throw when the defense is geared up to stop the run and it works, everyone loves the aggression. This has worked over and over for Belichick during his career. If you're attacking him for punting from midfield on 4th and 3, how would you have reacted if they failed to convert, putting Dallas in position to kick a game winning FG by picking up a couple of short gains? I suspect he would get ripped by fans for that decision.
Are you criticizing McCarthy for trying the FG on 4th and 1? If so, are you claiming that a seasoned NFL veteran kicker who routinely makes 50 yard FGs is basically the same as Szmyt, who was 1 of 4 beyond 40 yards this year, before his kick? Zeuerlein has a history of making important, long kicks. Szmyt wasn't even connecting in warmups from 45 yards.
But, to what I think was your point, yes, NFL head coaches sometimes make the wrong decision, in hindsight. But they are usually right more often than not (see Belichick) or they end up back in a coordinator role. Dino has seemingly made the wrong decisions in every game this season. I hope it's just a string of bad luck, but I suspect it may not be.

An NFL HC wouldn’t be able to get away with having poor clock management for very long. That’s just the cold hard truth.

I think the thing coaches at all levels are struggling with is the concept that 4th and 2 or less in modern football is not a kicking situation. The only beef I had with Bellichick yesterday was not going for it on 4th down in the OT (hated the 3rd down call which would have been different with a 4 down mindset). In the current world of football if you don't score the other team is going to especially the one that had moved up and down the field all day. People need to start embracing 4th and short as an offensive opportunity and not a kicking opportunity.
