I know schools report things differently and internal accounting might not reconcile with reporting but in the one set of publicly available data SU is reporting the the Dept. of Education the following.

$87,647,822 in total Ath. Dept revenue, 31st in D-1A,
$38,532,172 in revenue from football, 32nd in D-1A,
$ 29,766,537 in revenue from basketball, 2nd in D-1A,
$ 15,569,626 earning after expense, 7th in D-1A.

These aren't the days when Jake had to pinch pennies.

According to Coaches hotseat data, Shafer is tied for 67th in compensation.

Only P5 coaches making less, the guy at 0-7 Kansas, Flood at Rutgers by $200K, Cubit as an interim at Illinois.

13 coaches in the AAC, CUSA, and MWC make as much or more.

Trying to do this on the cheap isn't working.

Gotta open up the wallet for the HC and especially for his assistants. Hiring quality assistants is so, so crucial. There are several positions that I would change right now.

I agree with this 100% We need to go big or go home. Having one of the lowest paid HC's in P5 is not going to cut it anymore. We have made significant investments in improving our athletic facilities/infrastructure and are about to make a significant investment in the Dome. If the decision is made to replce this coaching staff, it's time to shoot for the moon and stop behaving like the red headed step child. If you want to be big time you'd better start thinking and acting like you're big time.

7 years ago we offered $2m+. I'm sure we'd at least do that much again. Probably more.

Are the resources there? Probably. Is the desire to spend them? I'm not so sure. The Chancellor has been in a huge cut back mode and trying to save money. maybe with one year left but I have a hard time seeing two years bought out

Three things.

1 offensive minded coach with proven system that has been successful at the college level. 1aa acceptable as well
2 HC experience is a must
3. Proven ability to do more with less, coach kids up

2 mil a year it's out there, just have to go get the guy

...and this is the crux of my argument that S.U. (The University) does not support SU football. When the rubber meets the road, and it's time to pony up the cash they suck. If you truly care about something, you make a real investment into it.

Montgomery is making $700K if you want to take a risk on a guy with one year.

Harsin and Fuente are already making $1.5, it would take more than $2M to get those guys.

SU screwed up not making Marrone happy, but there's no point in paying a 12-20 staff for the sake of paying them. I seriously doubt we would have the practice facility or Mark Coyle if we weren't serious about football.

If Shafer ever gets to the point where he earns a big raise, I'm sure he and his staff will get one. And I'm sure if we hire a wanted commodity that we'll pay for him.

Montgomery or Babers at Bowling Green I like. Joe Moorhead at Fordham puts a ton of points on the board as well if thinking a bit more fiscally responsible, he wont excite a ton of people up front but has a great track record. The AAC conference appears to pay coaches fairly well or at least close to us. Syracuse would have to go to about 2.5 to have a legit shot there. I honestly cant believe some of the coaches getting paid 2.5-3 mil these days. Crazy

Matt Campbell makes less than 500k.

Not next year he won't!!! :)

He would be on the list too, not sure we can get him but you never know. He looks like the next Illinois coach to me but you have to ask if Illinois or Purude will go to the HOT MAC coach because they have both been burned by it last time. Campbell looks to be in another league though, he would be great

I wouldn't give Shafer a raise now, but I'd make funds available if you want to pay some new assistants.

Agreed. Need to find a Donnie Henderson type, guy who is down and out a bit that can flat out coach and motivate. That guy was great

Campbell has a clause for a bonus if team gets 3.0 gpa or something like that.

He was extended last year through 2020 ... but I think his base might actually be less than 400K. He'd probably jump at a P5 if offered.

Part of the reason I like that guy is his Ohio roots. He also won 2 national championships as OC for D3 Mt Untion. I think their 2 year record was 28-1 or something.

I didn't know that he took over Toledo from Tim Beckman; eef. Might have worked for Urban at Bowling Green.

Might be the best coach on the Bills right now.

I think we do have good resources. Not great, but good enough. The biggest thing in my opinion will be if there is a change how much we'll be willing to spend on assistants. That will be key. And honestly location will be a factor. I love Syracuse but we have tough, long winters for someone who has never lived here. But the right guy will have the resources he needs for us to be consistently good.

How do you think he would have been as a HC since he made the final 4 post P.

Not sure, he was the DC of the Jets at that point correct? Then he kind of went into a downward spiral, it was a tough position to come in at that point.

What do you think? The guy is firey and had the respect and attention of his secondary at all times. I seem to remember Shamarko giving the guy a lot of credit for his success.

Don't know if he is HC material but certainly solid as a position coach, seems to have revitalized his career under Marrone and now with Rex. I think Rob Moore would make an excellent HC somewhere as well at some point. Guy is a real leader but he hates recruiting I understand that, which isn't good.

Would like to see Rob at Cornell or an IVY something like that. I really think highly of him. Doing great job with the Raiders, Having Cooper doesn't hurt either.

Marrone had a GREAT staff in 2012 for sure

Al Golden? Would he take a shot at being a DC/Assoc HC with a wink & nod that he'd get a first look if Shaf didn't last? Not sure that would work out economically, but I like the thinking of taking a shot on a coach.
