This morning I got an email from a friend who was in a foundry asking for help identifying a miniature statue.

The clues I was given, were the player is crouched over a football pointing forward and has the number 50 on his uniform.

A search of Hall of Fame centers turned up one who wore the number fifty, it was Jim Otto early in his NFL career. He later changed his uniform number to the more famous double zero.

My friend then emailed back and said the mystery was solved and that the mini was of the Rimington Award which is given annually to the best center in America.

Which brings me to this, in August Macky MacPherson was one of 44 players named to the watch list. Forty-four why does that number keep coming up in association with all things Syracuse?

Who here would have guessed five years ago that the grandson of our great coach Dick MacPherson would be a nominee?

On Monday the final cut was announced, Macky didn't make it.

I think we now all pretty much agree he has been a valuable Orangeman over his four year career.

It's my guess that young Mac will be recognized for his fine play and leadership and be given an important parting gift by the football program, he deserves it.

I don't think it would surprise any of us to see him, one day, roaming the sidelines in a coaching capacity.

The six finalist with the winner being announced on Thursday

Obviously, the coaching pedigree and the intelligence is there. Does he have the personality to recruit effectively? If so, he'd be an excellent guy to have around.

Since he bleeds Orange I don't see how he couldn't be coached into being a great recruiter. It would be nice to see him roaming the sidelines as a grad assistant or something in the next few years. Always good to have another link to the immediate past history of the program.

It would not surprise me one bit if Marrone took Macky with a late round draft pick or one of the first UFAs. Not saying he will but wouldn't be surprised.

Obviously, with his track record of drafting available SU players that helped him get to the show.
