While batting average is a helpful metric it isn't the end all be all for determining if you are a good hitter.
Just like the RPI for college basketball.

You can have a a horrible batting average but walk and get on base a lot. On base percentage matters more because it tells you how often a person is doing what their goal is. Too get on base without an out.

Lunardi is like the old baseball scouts who didn't care about OBP before Billy Beane revolutionized the sport. That is why while he created this Bracketology brand it has passed him by people who actually go deeper into the numbers.

On the other hand, if a player is hitting .400, that says a lot!

I have been playing a baseball game on my phone for a while and was trying to get a good offensive productivity metric to use. I invented -as far as I know- the stat RBI+Runs per AB. It has been pretty useful.

Not that it has anything to do with anything.

Baseball talk. RBIs are not a good stat because you are depending on other players being on base, usually in scoring position, before you bat which you have no control over.

Good analogy. I might modify it to something that stands out but is less meaningful, like seasonal home run totals, but I batting average works too!

That's why I also include runs. I was interested in flat out run production. But of course you are right, it isn't perfect at all.
