The Tournament: A History of ACC Men's Basketball

The show is BS. I don’t even know what tournament they are talking about but it doesn’t matter. Tournament success is meaningless. Regular season wins all that matter. Any rube knows this.

If you are interested in the history of basketball, especially the ACC, it's well worth your time to watch the ACC network program, The Tournament: A history of ACC Men's Basketball.
Many of the legendary names in men's basketball, both coaches and players are featured with great detail.

The show is far from being BS. Yes, it highlights the ACC, but in the process it talks about how the league started and the ACC tournament began. It features some of the legendary coaches and players. Evertt Case, Bones McKinney, Frank McGuire and how each made changes that impacted not only the ACC, but all basketball. They had a lineup of coaches at one point that rivaled the old Big East. And the legendary players that many have forgotten or never knew.

I wasn't sure about watching, but it is not simply a promo for the ACC, but history about basketball. I'm sure SWC will love this program.

I watched it after our BC game. Hard to decide if that's our history now or just "theirs."
My takeaway is that ACC basketball was built by guys who came from other regions (carpetbaggers).

LOL Actually that's part of it. Especially with Frank McGuire who won so much they forgot to call him a carpetbagger.

Interesting that the original ACC schools broke away from the Southern Conference because they wanted to play big time football.

I enjoyed the first two parts, most of which was new to me. My first recollections of the ACC were when Frank McGuire returned to the conference after his one year stint here with the Warriors. He continued the NYC pipeline at South Carolina, with John Roche, Kevin Joyce and Brian Winters being among my favorites.

Anyone have the link to “The Tournament: A History of Big East Men’s Basketball”

I understand the ACC is our FUTURE but if we’re going to be talking HISTORY I want to talk BIG EAST where SU had significant relevance.

Episode 9 was on last night...

Haven't watched it but I hope there is a Zapruder level breakdown of Randolph Childress' crossover vs. UNC. 1995 I believe.

We did get a highlight in Episode 10.

A Girard lob to Sidibe against UNC.

And then they pulled the plug.

That photo should've won a Pulitzer. One of my 2 favorite sports photos of all time.
Saw a lot of that on Saturday night ... except it wasn't pre-teen children.

I have seen some of the episodes.

It is nicely done. Some of the interviews and characters involved are excellent. Kind of shocking how awful basketball was for these schools until they decided to get serious about basketball and got help from outsiders (mostly from the Northeast) to show them what basketball was all about.

The quality of the videos from the 1950s and 1960s is not good.

Reynolds Coliseum was going to be sized like Cameron Indoor until Case got involved (construction was stalled during WWII due to lack of materials). He convinced them to make the arena a lot bigger. I think it was originally 12K, which was huge by ACC standards. Case was from Indiana and had far loftier expectations than most from the area.

I hope a day comes when Syracuse is featured prominently in the next set of these. We have got to get the program turned around ASAP.
