The first post war Triple Crown winner overcame numerous physical problems , including a deformed hoof that cause him to limp at a normal gait. But somehow he didn’t limp when at full speed. He won the Kentucky Derby by a record 8 lengths but tired at the end of the Preakness and lost much of a 4 length lead. It was thought to be a stamina issue and he was not the favorite for the Belmont. Assault trailed for much of the race but bolted down the stretch to win by 3 lengths. Assault was foaled at King Ranch and owned by the ranch’s owner, Robert Kleberg Jr. He was the only Triple Crown winner from Texas. Max Hirsch trained him and Warren Mehrtens was the jockey. Assault was sterile and thus had a long career as a race horse: 42 races with a record of 18-6-8.
