A son of Gallant Fox, also foaled at Clairborne Farm owned by Belair Stud and William Woodward SR and trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, his jockey was Willie “Smokey” Saunders. He had not been impressive as a two year old and his Kentucky Derby win, much less his Triple Crown, was a big surprise. He’s the only Triple Crown horse to also race in England, where he did well, losing at Ascot by a nose and winning other races. His overall record in 22 races was 9-7-2.
