WHIRLAWAY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o-5TR0m5N8
Whirlaway was a truly “crazy” horse with a mind of his own who, in his first race went right to the rail- the outside rail and actually won the race from there! His trainer, Ben Jones solved that by putting a blinder over his right eye so he couldn’t see the outside rail. He was very slow out of the gate but a great comeback horse. He set the Kentucky Derby record that Secretariat broke 32 years later but his most amazing race was the Preakness, where he started so slow he was way behind the rest of the field, then went through it like a hot knife through butter to win by as large a margin as he had started out behind by.
This was the first great winner of the Calumet Farms dynasty. Eddie Arcaro, who would win more Triple Crown races than any other jockey, was aboard. In 60 races, Whirlaway was 32-15-9.
