In past years I’ve kept track of the future schedules of undefeated teams to see who might remain seated in the musical chairs world of 2 and 4 team playoffs for the national championship. Now we have a 12 team playoff. The 5 highest ranked FBS conference champions and the 7 highest rated teams other than them will play off for the national championship. The four highest rated teams will get a bye. I think they should have had a 16 team playoff with all the conference champions, but that’s besides the point. The impact on my keeping track of the future challenges of the top teams is that I will look at every undefeated team. If that’s less than 12 teams, I’ll also look at ever 1 loss team. If that falls under 12, I’ll look at every 2 loss team, and so on. I won’t limit it to power conference teams.
What I will do is to simplify my listings by just showing what games they have ahead that will pit them against teams also on the list. I’ll give the won-lost record of each team, their point differentials, their ranking and their “against ranked teams” points from my post by that name. I’ll also give the date and location of the game, (signified by the use or non-use of the word “at”.
I also have been keeping track of the competition for two fictional bowls I created, the “Pesci Bowl” for the best Group of 5 teams and the Ty-D Bowl for the worst major college teams in the country. The Group of 5 can now get into the 12 team playoff so the Pesci Bowl will go to the best two Group of 5 teams that didn’t make the playoff. The Ty-D Bowl will continue to be the two worst teams. I’ll list winless teams until there are less than 2. Theen I’ll list the 1 win teams for that.
Here are the current undefeated teams:
ARMY 8-0 (303-90) #18 (writer’s)/#19 (coaches) ART (Against Ranked Teams): None
Sat 11/23 vs. NOTRE DAME 7-1 (293-97) #8/#9 ART: +73
Maybe is the Cadets can hold onto the ball, (unlike the Midshipmen), they could have a chance in this game.
BRIGHAM YOUNG 8-0 (281-157) #9/#9 ART +42
The only team to beat SMU and they crushed K-State 38-9. So they must be pretty good.
INDIANA 9-0 (419-123) #8/#10 ART: None
Sat 11/23 at OHIO STATE 7-1 (302-96) #3/#3 ART: +52
Is Indiana for real? Ask Nebraska.
U of MIAMI 9-0 (427-203) #4/#4 ART: None
With Pitt and Clemson going down hard, it looks like Miami vs. SMU for the ACC title.
OREGON 9-0 (318-142) #1/#1 ART: +60
The Ducks run the table until the (ugh! I’ve got to say it) Big Ten title game.
None of the five undefeated teams are scheduled to play each other in the regular season and they have only two games against 1-loss teams. But then come the conference title games.
BOISE STATE 7-1 (366-205) #12/#14 ART +16
They should have clear sailing to 11-1.
GEORGIA 7-1 (265-138) #2/#2 ART +98
Sat 11/16 vs. TENNESSEE 7-1 (305-99) #7/#6 ART: +90
An old-fashioned SEC confrontation with the national title on the table.
IOWA STATE 7-1 (244-124) #17/#18 ART: +6
The Cyclones last won a conference football championship 112 years ago. That’s longer than the Cubs!
LOUISIANA 7-1 (262-177) NR/NR ART: None
These are the Ragin’ Cajuns, formerly Southwestern Louisiana. They are in Lafayette.
NOTRE DAME 7-1 (293-97) #10/#8 ART: +73
Sat 11/23 vs. ARMY 8-0 (303-90) #18/#19 ART: None
The Irish could be real spoil-sports, having already walloped Navy. If they are, they’ll be in the tourney.
OHIO STATE 7-1 (302-96) #3/#3 ART: +52
Sat 11/23 vs. INDIANA 9-0 (419-123) #8/#10 ART: None
After losing a heart-breaker to the Ducks, they still have some challenges. Will they wish they had McCord?
PENN STATE 7-1 (246-120) #6#7 ART: +36
Can the Nittany Lions break through the Big 10’s glass ceiling? (Maybe they should drop the number and just call it the “Big” Conference?)
PITTSBURGH 7-1 (311-202) #23/#23 ART: -17
The Panthers now have a tough go to get to the ACC title game.
SOUTHERN METHODIST 8-1 (361-196) #13/#15 ART: +42
The Ponys should gallop all the way to a conference title game.
TENNESSEE 7-1 (305-99) #7/#6 ART: +90
Sat 11/16 vs. GEORGIA 7-1 (265-138) #2/#2 ART +98
Two schools with great football traditions.
TEXAS 7-1 (301-92) #5/#5 ART: +84
It’s still a bumpy ride in the SEC.
WASHINGTON STATE 7-1 (305-215) #20/#20 ART: -20
They could be 11-1 but not in because they haven’t done well against ranked teams and have no more to play because their conference came flying apart.
There are still 5 undefeated teams and 12-one loss teams, enough to fill out a 12 team field. There are also 19 two-loss teams waiting for them to get whittled down to under 12.
BYU is now a power conference team and Boise State has the inside track on being the highest rated Group of 5 team, (and thus get into the playoff), so the Pesci Bowl favorites at this time would be the American Conference winner vs. the Broncos.
And here are the Ty-D Bowl contenders, which now include the 1 win teams, including a couple of old friends of ours:
KENT STATE 0-8 (136-373) ART: -92 NR/NR ART: -92
A mortal lock.
AIR FORCE 1-7 (110-202) NR/NR ART: -12
The Falcons have won the most Commander in Chief’s Trophies (21 to 16 for Navy and 10 for Army). But they are brining up the rear this year.
FLORIDA STATE 1-8 (130-246) NR/NR ART: -2
11/23 Charleston Southern 1-8 (138-224) FCS
KENNESAW STATE 1-7 (119-249) NR/NR ART: none
11/9 TEXAS-EL PASO 1-8 (149-262) NR/NR ART: none
PURDUE 1-7 (162-295) NR/NR ART: -59
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 1-7 (143-271) NR/NR ART: none
11/30 at TROY STATE 1-7 (164-226) NR/NR ART: none
TEXAS-EL PASO 1-8 (149-262) NR/NR ART: none
11/9 KENNESAW STATE 1-7 (119-249) NR/NR ART: none
