In past years I’ve kept track of the future schedules of undefeated teams to see who might remain seated in the musical chairs world of 2 and 4 team playoffs for the national championship. Now we have a 12 team playoff. The 5 highest ranked FBS conference champions and the 7 highest rated teams other than them will play off for the national championship. The four highest rated teams will get a bye. I think they should have had a 16 team playoff with all the conference champions, but that’s besides the point. The impact on my keeping track of the future challenges of the top teams is that I will look at every undefeated team. If that’s less than 12 teams, I’ll also look at ever 1 loss team. If that falls under 12, I’ll look at every 2 loss team, and so on. I won’t limit it to power conference teams.
What I will do is to simplify my listings by just showing what games they have ahead that will pit them against teams also on the list. I’ll give the won-lost record of each team, their point differentials, their ranking and their “against ranked teams” points from my post by that name. I’ll also give the date and location of the game, (signified by the use or non-use of the word “at”.
I also have been keeping track of the competition for two fictional bowls I created, the “Pesci Bowl” for the best Group of 5 teams and the Ty-D Bowl for the worst major college teams in the country. The Group of 5 can now get into the 12 team playoff so the Pesci Bowl will go to the best two Group of 5 teams that didn’t make the playoff. The Ty-D Bowl will continue to be the two worst teams. I’ll list winless teams until there are less than 2. Theen I’ll list the 1 win teams for that.
Here are the current undefeated teams:
ARMY 9-0 (317-93) #19 (writer’s)/#187 (coaches) ART (Against Ranked Teams): None
Sat 11/23 vs. NOTRE DAME 9-1 (380-114) #8/#9 ART: +73
Maybe if the Cadets can hold onto the ball, (unlike the Midshipmen), they could have a chance in this game. Then they host Texas-San Antonio (5-5), then the American Conference championship game, (likely vs. TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #20/#20 ART: -2), then the Army-Navy (7-3) game.
INDIANA 10-0 (439-138) #5/#5 ART: None
Sat 11/23 at OHIO STATE 9-1 (378-103) #2/#2 ART: +52
It’s all about the Buckeyes. This will be the first ranked team Indiana has played, while building up those pretty numbers. The Hoosiers finish with lowly PURDUE 1-9 (172-389) NR/NR ART: -97.
OREGON 11-0 (373-173) #1/#1 ART: +60
They host Washington (6-5) on 11/30, by which time they should know their opponent, (Indiana or Ohio State), in the Big Ten title game.
None of the three undefeated teams are scheduled to play each other in the regular season and they have only two games against a 1-loss team. But then come the conference title games.
BOISE STATE 9-1 (436-247) #12/#12 ART +16
They should have clear sailing to 11-1. They go to Wyoming (2-8) and then host Oregon State (4-6).
BRIGHAM YOUNG 9-1 (316-195) #14/#14 ART +42
11/23/24 at ARIZONA STATE 8-2 (308-228) #21/#21 ART +38
The only team to beat SMU and they crushed K-State 38-9. So they must be pretty good.
They travel to Arizona State and then host Houston (4-6).
U of MIAMI 9-1 (450-231) #8/#11 ART: None
The Canes host Wake Forest (4-6), then come to the Dome to play Syracuse (7-3). If we don’t make the ranking after Connecticut, the Canes will have gone through the entire regular season without playing a ranked team.
NOTRE DAME 9-1 (380-114) #6/#6 ART: +73
Sat 11/23 vs. ARMY (317-93) #19/#18 ART: None
The Irish could be real spoil-sports, having already walloped Navy. They finish in LA vs. the USC Trojans (5-5).
OHIO STATE 9-1 (378-103) #2/#2 ART: +52
Sat 11/23 vs. INDIANA 10-0 (439-138) #5/#5 ART: None
After losing a heart-breaker to the Ducks, they still have some challenges. They host the Hoosiers, suddenly a powerhouse and then their arch-rival, Michigan (5-5). Will they wish they had McCord?
PENN STATE 9-1 (330-136) #4#4 ART: +36
The Nittany Lions had their big chance vs. Ohio State. They close at Minnesota (6-4) and host Maryland (4-6).
SOUTHERN METHODIST 9-1 (399-224) #13/#13 ART: +42
The Ponys should gallop all the way to the conference title game. They travel to Virginia (5-5) and host California (5-5). 5-5 won’t beat this team.
TEXAS 9-1 (370-119) #3/#3 ART: +84
Sat 11/30 at TEXAS A&M 8-2 (316-194) #15/#15 ART: +90
The Longhorn host Kentucky (4-6) then comes the trip to College Station. The eyes of Texas will be on that one.
There are now 8 one-loss teams, so together with the 3 remaining undefeateds, we are short of filling out a 12 team field. So it’s time to include the 2 loss teams.
ALABAMA 8-2 (395-169) #7/#7 ART: +118
The Tide are at Oklahoma (5-5) in a battle of blue-bloods, then comes the Iron Bowl vs. Auburn (4-6). That could be tougher than the records indicate.
ARIZONA STATE 8-2 (308-228) #21/#21 ART +38123
Saturday 11/23 BRIGHAM YOUNG 9-1 (316-195) #14/#14 ART +42
The Sun Devils have a big game against BYU at home, then travel to arch-rival Arizona (4-6).
CLEMSON 8-2 (363-228) #17/#17 ART: -6
They are all in-state, storming the Citadel (5-6, FCS) and then a tough South Carolina (7-3) team.
COLORADO 8-2 (341-227) #16/#16 ART: +5
They are at Kansas (4-6) who just beat BYU and then host Oklahoma State (3-7).
GEORGIA 8-2 (306-183) #10/#8 ART +98
The Bulldogs get to chew on Massachusetts (2-8) then host Georgia Tech (6-4).
IOWA STATE 8-2 (314-186) #22/#22 ART: +6
The Cyclones last won a conference football championship 112 years ago. That’s longer than the Cubs! They travel to Utah (4-6) and then host Kansas State (7-3).
JAMES MADISON 8-2 (353-180) NR/NR ART: none
The Dukes travel to Appalachian State (4-5) and then host Marshall (7-3). All three teams have won multiple FCS titles but will never do so again because they moved up to FBS.
LIBERTY 7-2 (282-215) NR/NR ART: None
Friday 11/29 SAM HOUSTON 8-2 (247-201) NR/NR ART: none
They have a tough go, hosting Western Kentucky (7-3) and then traveling to Sam Houston.
LOUISIANA 8-2 (339-220) #22/#24 ART: None
These are the Ragin’ Cajuns, formerly Southwestern Louisiana. They are in Lafayette. They host Troy (3-7), then travel to Louisiana-Monroe (5-5) which used to be Northeastern Louisiana, making this the ultimate directional bowl.
MEMPHIS 9-2 (388-249) NR/NR ART: None
Thursday 11/28 TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #20/#20 ART: -2
They have an interesting trip to Tulane and then maybe a battle with ARMY 9-0 (317-93) #19/#18 ART: None
MISSISSIPPI 8-2 (407-129) #9/#9 ART: +51
They go to Florida (5-5) and then back home to face Mississippi State (2-8) in the ‘Egg Bowl’.
SAM HOUSTON 8-2 (247-201) NR/NR ART: none
Friday, 11/29 LIBERTY 7-2 (282-215) NR/NR ART: None
They travel to Jacksonville State (7-3), then host Liberty. That’s a tough road to hoe.
TENNESSEE 8-2 (355-144) #11/#10 ART: +90
They get their cupcake game, hosting UTEP (2-8), then travel to pesky Vanderbilt (6-4).
TEXAS A&M 8-2 (316-194) #15/#15 ART: +90
Saturday11/30 vs. TEXAS 9-1 (370-119) #3/#3 ART: +84
Supposedly the Aggies left the SEC because they were sick of living in Texas’ shadow. They look like equals now. They travel to Auburn (4-6) and then host the Longhorns.
TULANE 9-2 (445-187) #20/#20 ART: -2
Thursday 11/28 MEMPHIS 9-2 (388-249) NR/NR ART: None
They host Memphis and the winner likely plays Army for the American conference title.
UNLV 8-2 (399-234) NR/NR ART: +4
They travel to San Jose State, (6-4) and then host Nevada-Reno, (3-8).
WASHINGTON STATE 8-2 (389-281) NR/#25 ART: -20
They travel to Oregon State (4-6) and then host Wyoming (2-8). Will 10-2 get the Cougars into the tournament?
BYU is now a power conference team and Boise State has the inside track on being the highest rated Group of 5 team, (and thus get into the playoff), so the Pesci Bowl favorites at this time would be the American Conference winner vs. the Broncos.
And here are the Ty-D Bowl contenders, which now include the 1 win teams, including a couple of old friends of ours:
KENT STATE 0-10 (143-448) ART: -92 NR/NR ART: -92
They host Akron (2-8) and finish at Buffalo (6-4). Could the Flashes beat the Zips?
FLORIDA STATE 1-9 (133-298) NR/NR ART: -35
They play Charleston Southern 1-9 (152-264) FCS and Florida (5-5)
Can the former #10 team rise to 2-10?
KENNESAW STATE 1-9 (171-315) NR/NR ART: none
They get Florida International (3-7) at home and then travel to Louisiana Tech (4-6).
PURDUE 1-9 (172-389) NR/NR ART: -97
Saturday, 10/30 at INDIANA 10-0 (439-138) #5/#6 ART: None
They close with road games at Michigan State (4-8) and (caramba!) Indiana.
This program has fallen apart since Jeff Brohm left.
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 1-9 (149-366) NR/NR ART: none
They play South Alabama (5-5) and then go to Troy State (3-7)
The Golden Eagles were long one of the best mid-majors. No longer.
