This is the point of the season when I look at the future schedules of undefeated teams to see who has the best chance to run the table and make the playoff. When the number of such teams falls below four, I chart the one-loss teams. I limit this to ‘power’ conference teams unless a ‘Group of 5’ team is in the Top ten of either the writer, coach’s or committee’s polls. I also have two fictional bowls for the two top mid-majors, (the ‘Pesci’ Bowl, named after vertically challenged but ever-feisty character actor Joe Pesci), and the two worst teams in the country, (the Ty-D Bowl, named after the Ty-D Bol toilet bowl cleaner). For the Pesci Bowl, I’ll keep track of the undefeated Group of 5 teams until there are less than two of them. Then I look at the one-loss G5 teams. For the Ty-D Bowl, I keep track of the winless teams until there are less than two of them. Then I’ll look at the 1 win teams. Rankings are by the writers/coaches/committee- when it comes out.

After WEEK 6

The Playoff contenders:

GEORGIA 6-0 (237-64) ranking: 1/2
10/15 Vanderbilt 3-3 (199-221)
10/22 BYE
10/29 Florida 4-2 (185-152)
11/5 TENNESSEE 5-0 (234-89) ranking: 6/8
11/12 at Mississippi State 5-1 (231-126) ranking: 16/17
11/19 at Kentucky 4-2 (158-98) ranking: 22/22
11/26 Georgia Tech 3-3 (104-168)
Comments: They don’t seem to be quite the team they were last year but if they can beat Tennessee, they might be 12-0 and in the Sec title game again.

OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/3
10/15 BYE
10/22 Iowa 3-3 (88-59)
10/29 at PENN STATE 5-0 (172-74) ranking: 10/10
11/5 at Northwestern 1-5 (106-166)
11/12 Indiana 3-3 (146-183)
11/19 at Maryland 4-2 (204-136)
11/26 MICHIGAN 6-0 (258-68) ranking: 5/4
Comments: As usual, it’s all about the Big Three. If one of them sweeps, they should also sweep the Big 10 West champs off the field and ride their broom to the playoffs.

ALABAMA 6-0 (266-75) ranking: 3/1
10/15 at TENNESSEE 5-0 (234-89) ranking: 6/8
10/22 Mississippi State 5-1 (231-126) ranking: 16/17
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Louisiana State 4-2 (191-114)
11/12 at MISSISSIPPI 6-0 (238-87) ranking: 9/9
11/19 Austin Peay State 4-2 (192-100)
11/26 Auburn 3-3 (122-150)
Comments: Two road games against Top Ten conference rivals who want to make a statement thatn they are ‘back’ loom. But this is Alabama.

CLEMSON 6-0 (236-110) ranking: 4/5
10/15 at Florida State 4-2 (188-125)
10/22 SYRACUSE 5-0 (192-70) ranking: 18/18
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Notre Dame 3-2 (128-116)
11/12 Louisville 3-3 (166-134)
11/19 U of Miami 2-3 (164-109)
11/26 South Carolina 4-2 (202-150)
Comments: They might not be the powerhouse of the DeShaun Watson/Trevor Lawrence era but with a dominant defense and four home games left, they could run the table and get back into the playoff. Incredibly, we are the only ranked team left on their schedule!

MICHIGAN 6-0 (258-68) ranking: 5/4
10/15 PENN STATE 5-0 (172-74) ranking: 10/10
10/22 BYE
10/29 Michigan State 2-4 (155-162)
11/5 at Rutgers 3-3 (137-132)
11/12 Nebraska 3-3 (171-176)
11/19 Illinois 5-1 (156-48) ranking: 24/UR
11/26 at OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/3
Comments: Yes, it’s about the Bog Three but the Illini has been playing some defense.

TENNESSEE 5-0 (234-89) ranking: 6/8
10/15 ALABAMA 6-0 (266-75) ranking: 3/1
10/22 Tennessee-Martin 4-2 (225-160)
10/29 Kentucky 4-2 (158-98) ranking: 22/22
11/5 at GEORGIA 6-0 (237-64) ranking: 01/02
11/12 Missouri 2-4 (151-148)
11/19 at South Carolina 4-2 (202-150)
11/26 at Vanderbilt 3-3 (199-221)
Comments: Is Tennessee really TENNESSEE again? We are about to find out. Two Matterhorns to climb but the rest of it is foothills.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 6-0 (241-112) ranking: 7/6
10/15 at Utah 4-2 (242-114) ranking: 20/19
10/22 BYE
10/29 at Arizona 3-3 (182-205)
11/5 California 3-2 (129-110)
11/11 COLORADO 0-5 (67-216)
11/19 at UCLA 6-0 (249-136) ranking: 11/12
11/26 Notre Dame 3-2 (128-116)
Comments: Nice to see the Trojans back in the top ten, (even if they are leaving for the Big Ten). Their game against UCLA could be the biggest one in decades.

OKLAHOMA STATE 5-0 (232-124) ranking: 8/7
10/15 at Texas Christian 5-0 (232-119) ranking: 13/15
10/22 Texas 4-2 (233-107) ranking: 22/24
10/29 at Kansas State 5-1 (172-100) ranking: 17/16
11/5 at Kansas 5-1 (239-158) ranking: 19/20
11/12 Iowa State 3-3 (139-82)
11/19 at Oklahoma 3-3 (185-175)
11/26 West Virginia 2-3 (191-148)
Comments: The Big 12 looks pretty strong overall this year, despite the problems at Oklahoma. The race for the title there will be wild, meaning that it will be hard for anyone to come out unscathed.

MISSISSIPPI 6-0 (238-87) ranking: 9/9
10/15 Auburn 3-3 (122-150)
10/22 at Louisiana State 4-2 (191-114)
10/29 at Texas A&M 3-3 (129-113)
11/5 BYE
11/12 ALABAMA 6-0 (266-75) ranking: 3/1
11/19 at Arkansas 3-3 (177-193)
11/24 Mississippi State 5-1 (231-126) ranking: 16/17
Comments: Is this 2022 or 1959? Both Syracuse and Mississippi are undefeated and in the rankings. The Rebels are pointing for BAMA but don’t overlook the Egg Bowl. Now let me take a moment to again thank Billy Cannon for opening the way for us to win the national championship.

PENN STATE 5-0 (172-74) ranking: 10/10
10/15 at MICHIGAN 6-0 (258-68) ranking: 5/4
10/22 Minnesota 4-1 (193-44)
10/29 OHIO STATE 6-0 (293-94) ranking: 2/3
11/5 at Indiana 3-3 (146-183)
11/12 Maryland 4-2 (204-136)
11/19 at Rutgers 3-3 (137-132)
11/26 Michigan State 2-4 (155-162)
Comments: Again, the Big Three. But Minnesota has put up some numbers, too.

UCLA 6-0 (249-136) ranking: 11/12
10/15 BYE
10/22 at Oregon 5-1 (252-173) ranking: 12/11
10/29 STANFORD 1-4 (145-164)
11/5 at Arizona State 2-4 (161-181)
11/12 Arizona 3-3 (182-205)
11/19 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 6-0 (241-112) ranking: 7/6
11/26 at California 3-2 (129-110)
Comments: Their game against USC could bring back memories:

Football Classics - USC vs. UCLA 1967

TEXAS CHRISTIAN 5-0 (232-119) ranking: 13/15
10/15 OKLAHOMA STATE 5-0 (232-124) ranking: 8/7
10/22 Kansas State 5-1 (172-100) ranking: 17/16
10/29 at West Virginia 2-3 (191-148)
11/5 Texas Tech 3-3 (206-179)
11/12 at Texas 4-2 (233-107) ranking: 22/24
11/19 at Baylor 3-2 (187-103) ranking: UR/23
11/26 Iowa State 3-3 (139-82)
Comments: Again, it’s a league full of good teams, (and Oklahoma might not be one of them). The Horned Frogs will be looking good if they get past O-State and K-State but their work will be far from finished.

SYRACUSE 5-0 (192-70) ranking: 18/18
10/15 North Carolina State 5-1 (183-94) ranking: 15/13
10/22 at CLEMSON 6-0 (236-110) ranking: 4/5
10/29 Notre Dame 3-2 (128-116)
11/5 at Pittsburgh 4-2 (210-157)
11/12 Florida State 4-2 (188-125)
11/19 at Wake Forest 5-1 (247-153) ranking: 14/14
11/26 at Boston College 2-4 (120-174)
Comments: Take a picture of this entry. It might not last long. Six straight teams with winning records. At least we don’t have five Top 25 teams to play, as we did a couple weeks ago. But they aren’t far from that level.

The Pesci Bowl contenders:

COASTAL CAROLINA 6-0 (103-75)
10/15 Old Dominion 2-3 (108-136)
10/22 BYE
10/29 at Marshall 3-2 (147-81)
11/3 Appalachian State 3-3 (211-173)
11/12 Southern Mississippi 2-3 (135-120)
11/19 at Virginia 2-4 (107-149)
11/26 at JAMES MADISON 5-0 (221-75) ranking: 25/UR
Comments: It all comes down to the last game of the regular season, when one of these teams will be lose. That will get me into the one loss teams, which I‘ll list then rather than now to save my time.

JAMES MADISON 5-0 (221-75) ranking: 25/UR
10/15 at Georgia Southern 3-3 (222-182)
10/22 Marshall 3-2 (147-81)
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Louisville 3-3 (166-134)
11/12 at Old Dominion 2-3 (108-136)
11/19 Georgia State 2-4 (179-200)
11/26 COASTAL CAROLINA 6-0 (103-75)
Comments: Not only is James 5’4”” and 271 years old but he’s also just one guy.

The Ty-D Bowl contenders:

COLORADO 0-5 (67-216)
10/15 California 3-2 (129-110)
10/22 at Oregon State 4-2 (195-163)
10/29 Arizona State 2-4 (161-181)
11/5 Oregon 5-1 (252-173) ranking: 12/11
11/11 at SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 6-0 (241-112) ranking: 7/6
11/19 at Washington 4-2 (246-161)
11/26 Utah 4-2 (242-114) ranking: 20/19
Comment: Amazingly the Buffs are the only winless team in the BCS, which opens up the following can of worms:

AKRON 1-5 (110-245)
10/15 CENTRAL MICHIGAN 1-5 (156-184)
10/22 at Kent State 2-4 (163-178)
10/29 Miami University 3-3 (125-151)
11/8 Eastern Michigan 4-2 (189-190)
11/12 BYE
11/19 at Buffalo 3-3 (179-164)
11/26 at NORTHERN ILLINOIS 1-5 (190-230)
Comment: The Zips have a couple of golden chances to get off this list. But they are those teams golden chance to get off of it as well.

ARMY 1-4 (139-165)
10/15 Colgate 1-4 (86-153)
10/22 Louisiana-Monroe 2-4 (122-212)
10/29 BYE
11/5 Air Force 4-2 (191-108)
11/12 at Troy 4-2 (153-121)
11/19 Connecticut 3-4 (124-208)
11/26 at Massachusetts 1-5 (77-190)
12/3 BYE
12/10 (in Philadelphia) Navy 2-3 (106-105)
Comments: I though Army was better than 1-4 and they will be before the season ends.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN 1-5 (156-184)
10/15 at AKRON 1-5 (110-245)
10/22 Bowling Green
10/29 BYE
11/2 at NORTHERN ILLINOIS 1-5 (190-230)
11/9 Buffalo 3-3 (179-164)
11/16 Western Michigan 2-4 (136-185)
11/26 at Eastern Michigan 4-2 (189-190)
Comments: See Akron, (above).

10/15 at Alabama-Birmingham 3-2 (173-84)

10/29 at Rice 3-2 (154-155)
11/5 Western Kentucky 3-3 (245-142)
11/12 at Middle Tennessee State 3-3 (179-186)
11/19 Louisiana Tech 2-3 (151-186)
Comments: Nothing but 3-2 and 2-3 teams the rest of the way. They should be able to beat at elast one of them.

COLORADO STATE 1-4 (60-178)
10/15 Utah State 2-4 (122-209)
10/22 HAWAII 1-5 (101-243)
10/29 at Boise State 4-2 (163-115)
11/5 at San Jose State 4-1 (144-70)
11/12 Wyoming 4-3 (163-184)
11/19 at Air Force 4-2 (191-108)
11/26 New Mexico 2-4 (116-137)
Comments: The Rams better ram through the next two weeks before the going gets hard.

FRESNO STATE 1-4 (118-146)
10/15 San Jose State 4-1 (144-70)
10/22 at New Mexico 2-4 (116-137)
10/29 San Diego State 3-3 (111-143)
11/5 HAWAII 1-5 (101-243)
11/11 at Nevada-Las Vegas 4-2 (196-152)
11/19 at Nevada-Reno 2-4 (136-173)
11/26 Wyoming 4-3 (163-184)
Comments: The Bulldogs are usually one of the better mid-majors. Not this year.

HAWAII 1-5 (101-243)
10/15 Nevada-Reno 2-4 (136-173)
10/22 at COLORADO STATE 1-4 (60-178)
10/29 Wyoming 4-3 (163-184)
11/5 FRESNO STATE 1-4 (118-146)
11/12 Utah State 2-4 (122-209)
11/19 Nevada-Las Vegas 4-2 (196-152)
11/26 at San Jose State 4-1 (144-70)
Comments: The Warriors have had some behind-the-scenes problems that have hurt their program. If only they could get all those big Hawaiian and Samoan players to stay home!

MASSACHUSETTS 1-5 (77-190)
10/15 Buffalo 3-3 (179-164)
10/22 BYE
10/29 NEW MEXICO STATE 1-5 (84-194)
11/4 at Connecticut 3-4 (124-208)
11/12 at Arkansas State 2-4 (193-191)
11/19 at Texas A&M 3-3 (129-113)
11/26 ARMY 1-4 (139-165)
Comments: This is why you schedule New Mexico State. But it’s also why you schedule Massachusetts these days.

NEW MEXICO STATE 1-5 (84-194)
10/15 New Mexico 2-4 (116-137)
10/22 San Jose State 4-1 (144-70)
10/29 at MASSACHUSETTS 1-5 (77-190)
11/5 BYE

11/19 at Missouri 2-4 (151-148)
11/26 at Liberty 5-1 (187-138)
Comments: A perennial Ty-D Bowl contender. If they can get by the UMASS game without winning, the could be home free for the Pesci Bowl.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS 1-5 (190-230)
10/15 at Eastern Michigan 4-2 (189-190)
10/22 at Ohio University 3-3 (199-244)

11/12 at Minnesota 4-1 (193-44)
11/19 at Purdue 4-2 (195-132)
11/26 Illinois 5-1 (156-48) ranking: 24/UR
Comments: Their worst opponent is Iowa, (the only one without a winning record), and their only two home games are the ones against ranked teams. 1-11 here we come!

SOUTH FLORIDA 1-5 (146-218)
10/15 Tulane 5-1 (186-80)
10/22 Bye
10/29 at Houston (3-3 188-202)
11/5 at Temple 2-3 (75-84)

11/18 at Tulsa 2-4 (198-211)
11/26 Central Florida 4-1 (178-73)
Comment: it’s strange how this program has declined but they will have four games in a row that could get them off this list.

STANFORD 1-4 (145-164)
10/15 at Notre Dame 3-2 (128-116)
10/22 Arizona State 2-4 (161-181)

11/19 at California 3-2 (129-110)
11/26 Brigham Young 4-2 (192-160)
Comments: If they can’t beat the Sun Devils, the Cardinal will have a hard time getting off the ground, no matter how hard they flap their wings.
