Every October I start charting the future games and possible fates of three groups of teams:
- The undefeated power conference teams, (and when that gets to be less than 4 teams, the one-loss teams), to anticipate who might be in the playoff.
- The top FBS non-power conference teams, the best two of which will play in the fictional “Pesci Bowl” to determine the best of such teams. I named it after the actor Joe Pesci, who plays vertically challenged but feisty characters. These teams never get selected for the playoff but still think they’re pretty good. (I’ll stick with the undefeated teams until there are less than 2 of them.)
- The worst FBS teams in the country, the two worst of which will play in the mythical “Ty-D-Bowl Bowl”, named after a toilet cleaning product, to determine who the worst major college team in the country is. (I’ll stick with winless teams until there are less than two of them.)
Here are the current lists:
Playoff teams
LOUISIANA STATE 13-0 (621-275) Ranked: #1/#1/#1 (Committee/Writers/Coaches) Sagarin: #3 ART1, (against ranked teams): +154; ART2 (as a ranked team): +54; Total: +208
Vs.
OKLAHOMA 12-1 (562-319) Ranked: #4/#4/#4 Sagarin: #5 ART1: +89; ART2: -13 Total: +76
Comments: The Tigers seem a significantly better team than the Sooners, quite capable of out-scoring them. Both teams have had their defenses questioned but Oklahoma has actually given up the most points. LSU has had their hippos to grow up to match their elephants. In their alst trhee games they gave up a total fo 37 points to Arkansas, Texas A&M and Georgia.
OHIO STATE 13-0 (633-163) Ranked: #2/#2/#2 Sagarin: #1 ART1: +171; ART2: +177 Total: +349
Vs.
CLEMSON 13-0 (605-138) Ranked: #3/#3/#3 Sagarin: #2 ART1: +76; ART2: +161 Total: +237
Comments: I feel strongly that these are the two best teams in the country. The Buckeyes have been crushing teams, even good teams all year. Penn State lost only 17-28 but they got a couple of quick scores off of turnovers to get that close. Michigan had momentum but was rolled over by 29 points. Wisconsin lost the first game 7-38 and was excited to lead the big ten title game at halftime only to lose the second half 0-27. People are suggesting Clemson must be over-rated because they haven’t played many ranked teams. That’s true but after the North Carolina game, they have been crushing their opposition just like they did last year after their game with us. They won their last 7 regular season games last year by a combined 358-84, (51-12), then crushed Pittsburgh in the ACC title game 42-10, then moved into the playoff and rolled over Notre Dame 30-3 and Alabama 44-16. That’s a 10-0 run by an average score of 47-11. This year they seemed in low gear through the North Carolina game, which they rallied to win. 21-20. Since then they are 8-0, (415-78), an average of 52-10. It’s not their fault that their most of their opponents haven’t been ranked. If they are treating everyone they play like they were a punch-press, it’s entirely possible that they will continue to do so against the top teams from other conferences, as they did last year.
Pesci Bowl Teams
APPALACHIAN STATE 12-1 (512-263) Ranked #20/#20/#20 Sagarin: #28 ART1: none ART2: +140 Total: +140
BOISE STATE 12-1 (479-268) Ranked: #19/#18/#18 Sagarin: #24 ART1: none ART2: +117 Total: +117
MEMPHIS 12-1 (527-317) Ranked: #17/#15/#15 Sagarin: #17 ART1: +34 ART: +42 Total: +76
This is a tough one. The imaginary Pesci Bowl has always bene a single game between two teams. But which two teams? Memphis and Boise have the highest rankings. App State has done the best in games involving ranked teams, (as one + against them). They’ve also out-scored their opponents by the largest margin, (+249 to +211 for Boise and +210 for Memphis). In the end, I’ll go for with the rankings and pit Memphis against Boise State.
Ty-D-Bowl Teams
AKRON 0-12 (126-435) Sagarin: #216 ART1: none
MASSACHUSETTS 1-11 (237-632) Sagarin: #231 ART1: none
OLD DOMINION 1-11 (195-358) Sagarin: #173 ART1: -6
TEXAS-EL PASO 1-11 (235-431) Sagarin: #194 ART1: none
(They didn’t have any ART2)
The Ty-D-Bowl contenders have finished their seasons of I’ve got to make a call here. It’s too bad there isn’t a four team playoff of the Ty-D-Bowl title. Akron has got to be in there because they are the only winless team. The other team has to be UMASS who has the lowest Sagarin ranking and one of the worst defenses ever to take the field and the worst point differential, (-395).
