As of 12/4/11, there is one undefeated team left in Division 1A/FBS college football. (The rankings are their current BCS rankings.) LOUISIANA STATE 13-0 (500-137) is ranked #1 They have beaten #5 Oregon, #23 West Virginia, # 25 Auburn, #2 Alabama, #6 Arkansas and #16 Georgia. On the basis of 24 points for beating #2, 23 for #3, etc, they have accumulated 79 points in games vs. ranked teams. They’ve outscored those teams by 224-91, an average of 37-15. Here are the remaining one loss teams: ALABAMA 11-1 (432-106) ranked #2 They’ve beaten #22 Penn State, #6 Arkansas and #25 Auburn, but lost to #1 LSU. That gives them 25 “points” against ranked teams. They’ve outscored those opponents by 113-48, an average of 28-12. OKLAHOMA STATE 11-1 (592-310) ranked #3 They’ve beaten #24 Texas, #12 Baylor, #8 Kansas State and #14 Oklahoma by a total of 193-105, (48-26), earning them 46 points. STANFORD 11-1 (523-244) ranked #4 They’ve only played one BCS ranked team, #5 Oregon, and lost 30-53. They’ve also played USC, which is on probation but ranked #5 in the AP poll. They won that game, 38-35 and so I’ll give them 21 points. But their average score against ranked teams is only 34-44. BOISE STATE 11-1 (519-219) ranked #7 Their conference has no title game. They’ve played one ranked team, #16 Georgia and beat them 35-21, to get 10 points. HOUSTON 12-1 (560-300) ranked #19 They have now played a currently ranked team, Southern Mississippi, but lost to them 28-49, so they get no points. Comment: I believe that LSU and Alabama are the best two teams in the country and from that prospective, they should be playing each other in the 1 vs. 2 game for the national championship. But I’d really rather see someone get a crack at LSU that they haven’t already beaten. Than seems fairer to LSU and to the opponent and more interesting for the fans. You can’t claim it would be unfair to Alabama- they had their chance as a home favorite and lost. Besides, Oklahoma State, the most logical opponent among those who haven’t played LSU already, has actually beaten more ranked opponents and they’ve beaten them by the same margin as LSU.
