As of 10/30/11, these are the undefeated teams left in Division 1A/FBS college football. (The BCS standings are out now and since they, not the writer‘s or coach’s poll determine who gets into the national championship game, I‘ll just quote the BCS ranking from here on in.)
Teams in BCS automatic qualifying conferences:
LOUISIANA STATE 8-0 (314-92) is ranked #1
Their remaining opponents:
11/5 at Alabama #2 (8-0)
11/12 Western Kentucky (4-4)
11/19 at Mississippi (2-6)
11/25 Arkansas #7 (7-1)
They have two remaining games against ranked teams and two against teams with winning records. They play one undefeated team and one one loss team. Their league has a championship game.
ALABAMA 8-0 (315-55) ranked #2
Their remaining opponents:
11/5 Louisiana State #1 (8-0)
11/12 at Mississippi State (4-4)
11/19 Georgia Southern (7-1)
11/26 at Auburn #22 (6-3)
They have two remaining games against ranked teams and one against an undefeated team. They have three games remaining against teams with winning records. Their league has a championship game.
OKLAHOMA STATE 8-0 (399-212) ranked #3
Their remaining opponents:
11/5 Kansas State #14 (7-1)
11/12 at Texas Tech (5-3)
11/18 at Iowa State (4-4)
12/3 Oklahoma #6 (7-1)
They have two remaining games vs. ranked teams and three against teams with winning records. None of their opponents has a losing record. Their league does not have a championship game.
STANFORD 8-0 (396-136) ranked #4
Their remaining opponents:
11/5 at Oregon State (2-6)
11/12 Oregon #8 (7-1)
11/19 California (4-4)
11/26 Notre Dame (5-3)
They have only one remaining game against a ranked team and two against teams with winning records. One of those teams has one loss. Their league has a championship game.
Teams in non-automatic qualifying conferences:
BOISE STATE 7-0 (303-113) ranked #5
Their remaining opponents:
11/5 at UNLV (1-5)
11/12 Texas Christian (6-2)
11/19 at San Diego State (4-3)
11/26 Wyoming (5-2)
12/3 New Mexico (0-7)
They have no remaining games against ranked teams but two games against teams with winning records. Their league does not have a championship game.
HOUSTON 8-0 (419-198) rank #13
11/5 at UAB (1-7)
11/10 at Tulane (2-7)
11/19 Southern Methodist (5-3)
11/26 at Tulsa (5-3)
They have no games against ranked teams. Two are against a team with a winning record. Their league has a championship game.
Comment: Two more teams went down. Clemson couldn’t handle Georgia Tech’s option attack and Kansas State proved to be a paper w2ildcat vs. Oklahoma. Incidentally, App State took down Georgia Southern so their game against Alabama can’t be FBS#1 vs. FCS#1. Too bad.
It leaves us with the Alabama-LSU winner vs. either Oklahoma State, Stanford or Boise State, (I still can’t see Houston as a serious contender, despite the numbers Case Keenum is putting up). The Cowboys certainly looked good yesterday but like Clemson, I just don’t think they have the defense to run the table. I think Oklahoma will take them out. Stanford still has to face Oregon, a rivalry game with Cal and Notre Dame, then the first Pac 12 title game. That will either knock them off their perch or give them the best resume on their side of the bracket. Boise State is hoping they both fall but as usual their conference is a a ball and chain, although it’s a better conference than the one they were in last year.
If LSU beats Alabama, they can’t afford to slip up vs. Arkansas. Alabama has a rivalry game vs. Auburn- at Auburn. Both will have to win an SEC title game but will be heavily favored to do so.
Of course there’s always the possibility that one loss teams could slip in there. If the Alabama-LSU game is a nail-biter and they both run the table there could be a rematch. If Okie State, Stanford and Boise all go down, (or maybe just the first two), the one loss teams come into play. Next week I’ll add all the one loss teams to the list so we can keep track of them, too.
Remaining games between undefeated teams:
11/5 LSU at Alabama (that’s it)
Here are the games between undefeated teams and those dangerous-looking one loss teams:
11/12 Oregon at Stanford
11/25 LSU at Arkansas
12/3 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
