As of 11/13/11, these are the undefeated teams left in Division 1A/FBS college football. (The BCS standings are out now and since they, not the writer‘s or coach’s poll determine who gets into the national championship game, I‘ll just quote the BCS ranking from here on in.) Teams in BCS automatic qualifying conferences: LOUISIANA STATE 10-0 (365-107) is ranked #1 Their remaining opponents: 11/19 at Mississippi (2-8) 11/25 Arkansas #6 (9-1) They have one remaining game against a ranked team and a team with a winning record. They play a one loss team. Their league has a championship game. OKLAHOMA STATE 10-0 (517-263) ranked #2 Their remaining opponents: 11/18 at Iowa State (5-4) 12/3 Oklahoma #5 (8-1) They have one remaining game a ranked team and two against teams with winning records. None of their opponents has a losing record. They play a one loss team. Their league does not have a championship game. Unless LSU and Oklahoma State win out, we are going to have a one-loss team in the national titles game. Here are the one loss teams in BCS-AQ conferences: ALABAMA 9-1 (345-71) ranked #3 Their remaining opponents: 11/19 Georgia Southern (9-1) 11/26 at Auburn #24 (6-4) They have one remaining game against a ranked team. They have two games remaining against teams with winning records. One is with a one-loss team but it’s with an FCS team. Their league has a championship game. OREGON 9-1 (467-217) ranked #4 11/19 Southern California (8-2) 11/26 Oregon State (2-8) They have no remaining games against a ranked team, (but USC would surely be ranked if not on probation). They have one games remaining against a team with a winning records. Their league has a championship game. OKLAHOMA 8-1 (409-178) ranked #5 11/19 at Baylor (6-3) 11/26 Iowa State (5-4) 12/3 at Oklahoma State #2 (10-0) They have one remaining game against a ranked team. They have three games remaining against teams with winning records. One is against an undefeated team. Their league does not have a championship game. ARKANSAS 9-1 (388-215) ranked #6 11/19 Mississippi State (5-5) 11/25 at Louisiana State #1 (10-0) They have one game remaining against a ranked team or a team with a winning record. That team is undefeated team. Their league has a championship game. CLEMSON 9-1 (373-259) ranked #7 11/19 at North Carolina State (5-4) 11/26 at South Carolina #12 (7-2) They have one remaining game against a ranked team. They have two games remaining against teams with winning records. Their league has a championship game. VIRGINIA TECH 9-1 (299-165) ranked #8 11/17 North Carolina (6-4) 11/26 at Virginia (7-3) They have no remaining games against a ranked team. They have two games remaining against teams with winning records. Their league has a championship game. STANFORD 9-1 (464-202) ranked #9 Their remaining opponents: 11/19 California (5-4) 11/26 Notre Dame (6-3) They have only one remaining game against a ranked team but two against teams with winning records. Their league has a championship game. Teams in non-automatic qualifying conferences: HOUSTON 10-0 (547-228) ranked #11 11/19 Southern Methodist (6-4) 11/26 at Tulsa (7-3) They have no games against ranked teams. Two are against a team with a winning record. Their league has a championship game. There are no remaining games between undefeated teams. Here are the games between undefeated teams and those dangerous-looking one loss teams or between one loss teams, (BCS AQ only): 11/25 Arkansas (8-1) at LSU (9-0) 12/3 Oklahoma (8-1) at Oklahoma State (9-0) Comment: Now Stanford and Boise State are out of the picture. Boise’s losses the last two years have come in their conference so maybe their conference(s) have not been as soft as people think. Now their conference, improbably will be the Big East. Stanford will fall victim to the rule that if you are going to lose, lose early. Oregon is being mentioned as a possible opponent for LSU even thought the Tigers already beat them decisively because that was their first game of the season and thus the most forgivable. But I don’t want to see any rematches. Give someone else a shot. Let’s throw Oklahoma State’s offense , (52 points per game) against LSU’s defense, (11ppg). If Oklahoma takes the Cowboys down, find somebody else, (maybe the Sooners). But I’d like to see the Cowboys make it. I like new blood in the title game, like Oregon last year. Arkansas could still spoil LSU’s party- or even displace them in the title game and an improving Georgia team likely awaits in the SEC title game. Alabama is playing an FCS team but one with 6 national championships and a rivalry game with fading Auburn. What if LSU, Arkansas and Alabama all wind up 11-1 with them each 1-1 in the round robin? What if Arkansas plays in the SEC title game and beats Georgia? Who the heck knows? Oregon needs to watch out for Southern Cal and the “bedlam” game finally means something. I can’t see Houston or any of the other one loss teams figuring in this at this point.
