The Upside

- We were the first team in 5 games to score more than 60 points vs. the Tar Heels, (much of it in garbage time…)

- Chris Bell had his second straight good game, scoring 13 points in only 22 minutes, (after tweaking something early), on 3 for 3 from the arc and 4 for 4 from the foul line. He’s had a career high 20 points vs. BC, so he may be taking some strides toward become in the second coming of Demetris Nichols, who struggle for two years and then became the reliable dead eye we had envisioned.

- Judah Mintz, (21) and Quadir Copeland (16) got their points, but mostly in garbage time. In the box score it looks like they “carried the team”, except this team was not carried.

- Maliq Brown could not stop Armando Bacot, (16p, 11r) and didn’t get the ball much himself but played solidly anyway with 6p, 8r, 2a, 2s and a block.

11-5 (2-3) with 15+ to go…

LET’S GO ORANGE!

Net Points

This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points is the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).

Maliq Brown game: 11NP in 28 minutes; season: 235NP in 391 minutes = 24.0NP/40m
Chris Bell game: 9NP in 22 minutes; season: 91NP in 391 minutes = 9.3NP/40m
Quadir Copeland game: 9NP in 22 minutes; season: 170NP in 330 minutes = 20.6NP/40m
Judah Mintz game: 8NP in 28 minutes; season: 221NP in 503 minutes = 17.6NP/40m
Peter Carey game: 2NP in 9 minutes; season: 4NP in 21 minutes = 7.6NP/40m
JJ Starling game: 2NP in 25 minutes; season: 130NP in 533 minutes = 9.8NP/40m
Kyle Cuffe game: -1NP in 19 minutes; season: 21NP in 187 minutes = 4.5NP/40m
Benny Williams game: -2NP in 14 minutes; season: 55NP in 179 minutes = 12.2NP/40m
Justin Taylor game: -3NP in 26 minutes; season: 106NP in 433 minutes = 9.8NP/40m
Mounir Hima game: -3NP in 3 minutes; season: 5NP in 22 minutes = 9.1NP/40m

Naheem McLeod game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 108NP in 202 minutes = 21.4NP/40m
William Patterson game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40m
Chance Westry game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40m

The Downside

- Still another great sports weekend gotten off to another sour start by having to begin it with an SU debacle.

- Coach Autry stresses “energy”. This team was overflowing with it at the beginning of the BC game and had none of it today. Teenagers….

- Our shooting was never going to be a strength of this team but we’re having a China Syndrome right now. Bell is actually doing pretty well at 38.1%, (up from 34.5%) last year and Mintz has improved from 30.3% to 35.6%. But Justin Taylor has fallen from 39.3% to 31.8% and Benny Williams has cratered from 39.6% to 17.4%. JJ Starling was 29.9% last year and hoped for improvement but is now 24.4%. Quadir Copeland has improved – from 11.1% to 21.1%. Kyle Cuff never attempted a three in his short stint with the Jayhawks last year but is now shooting 31.3%. Chance Westry, who we are waiting to see, was 0 for 14 last year. In ACC games, we are 22 for 93 from the arc, 23.7% and have yet to hit 30%. Watching our games, we seem to be getting our shots but they are not close, clanging off each side of the rim if they hit it at all. And I have no stats for it, but we surely aren’t doing any better with 2 point jumpers.

- Failing that, we need other ways to generate offense. Our primary way is to try to spread the defense out by spreading the offense out and having our players, who are good at driving to the basket, try to score mostly on their own. But, as Coach Autry explained, North Carolina’s pressure defense took us out of our spacing. Also we couldn’t make even pull-ups and didn’t get the calls from the refs.

- The only other thing we could do was use pressure of our own to generate fast breaks and beat the Tar Heels to the basket. If we came out playing defense as we did against BC, this might have bene a game but we didn’t and it wasn’t. Maybe if we went to a full court press as they did but UNC I very hard to press. They have good guards but more importantly they are a very strong rebounding team and a weak rebounding team like SU has to send 5 to the glass to compete there or give up fast breaks to the best fast breaking team in the country. And you have to make shots to set up a full court press and we don’t make shots. We weren’t just playing Tar Heels. We were playing Scylla and Charybdis.

- But none of that matters if you aren’t playing any defense and we were playing very little of it. Or at least UNC was making it look like we weren’t with their excellent passing. That’s another thing: we have a lot of good passers on our team and we are at our best sharing the ball, but the offense is set up for iso ball.

- Our possession formula is to break even on the boards and be plus on turnovers. We were -23 on the boards and -3 on turnovers. The better shooting team got the ball 70 times, (their rebs + our turnovers) to our 44 times.

- Our immediate goal was to get back to the Big Dance and our ultimate goal was to get back to the Top 25. Both seem like pipe dreams as we haven’t beaten anyone good and haven’t even gotten close to them. The most we can accomplish is to try to be “best of the rest”. Maybe we can make the NIT after two years of sitting home.

So, with that over, I can sit back and watch two old favorite teams, the Cleveland Browns and he Miami Dolphins, try to win NFL playoff games...

So far, too bad!
