The Upside
- My definition of a great game is a game in which both teams had their back to the wall an got back in it. That was this one, except is was a game between two bed teams that kept putting themselves against the wall.
- We won the turnover battle, 13-16, had 10 steals to 6, won the rebound battle 50-45, and out-shot BC in all three categories. We should have won easily but pulled it out, anyway.
- We gave one point in the final overtime, although that may have been mostly due to exhaustion.
- Eddie Lampkin: “Oh, he gets all those rebounds by grabbing his own missed shots. When he got 23 rebounds vs. Pittsburgh, he missed 5 shots and got 10 defensive rebounds. Last night He had 18 rebounds, missed 6 shots and had 12 defensive rebounds. He has 9 double-doubles on the year and 63% of his rebs have been defensive. So I don’t want to hear that old canard any more. The other thing about Eddie that he’s been hammered on is his stamina due to his weight and probably related back problem. He led us with 49 minutes played. He has his limitations, (all our players do), but it might help if we got off Eddie’s back.
- Both teams killed themselves at the foul line. We missed 14 of 32 free throws, including the front end of three one-on-ones. JJ Starling twice went 1 of 2 when 2 of 2 would have won it. Fortunately the conference’s best free throw shooter, Donald Hand, a 91% guy, somehow went 3 for 8 and that allowed us to win the game. Thank you Donald!
- JJ Starling kept playing right through his ups and downs an led us in scoring, as our best players should. His shoot percentage improved to 10/22 (45%), after a three game stretch of 14/49 (29%).
- Jyare Davis continued to perform well. May his biggest stat was 0 for 0 from the three point line.
- Elijah Moore came out on fire and get the team going with two threes and a 2. He subbed out at 13:06 and sat on the bench for 11 minutes. He wound up playing 17 minutes with 10NP while Jaquan Carlos played 33 minutes with one. Whatever happed to “going with the hot hand”?
- Chris Bell actually sealed it with a couple free throws. He was 5 for 6 from the line and, amazingly, had 6 rebounds.
- If Eddie ever gets tired, Naheem McCloud had 5NP in 5 minutes and is now averaging 22.1NP/4, best on the team. Center is the strongest position on our team.

Net Points
This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points are the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).
Eddie Lampkin game: 21NP in 49 minutes season: 329NP in 711 minutes = 18.5NP/40m
JJ Starling game: 15NP in 42 minutes season: 182NP in 589 minutes = 12.4NP/40m
Jyare Davis game: 15NP in 44 minutes season: 222NP in 562 minutes = 15.8NP/40m
Elijah Moore game: 10NP in 17 minutes season: 90NP in 317 minutes = 8.9NP/40m
Chris Bell game: 7NP in 29 minutes season: 129NP in 534 minutes = 9.7NP/40m
Kyle Cuffe game: 6NP in 23 minutes season: 61NP in 265 minutes = 9.2NP/40m
