- The second half looked like vintage SU vs. Ivy level teams. In the first 6:29 we outscored the Bears 23-6 to take a 23 point lead and then never let them get within 20 the rest of the way. In the first half a 16-4 start was 22-28 the rest of the way. In the second half a 23-6 start was 32-24 the rest of the way. Building on a great start is important, even if you don’t retain the same level of dominance.

- Getting hot is one thing: in that second half it was about our defense as well as our offense. With 5:13 left, we’d only given up 18 second half points. Brown got 12 more in garbage time. If we are going to have any kind of success this season, we need to become at least a decent defensive team. If we can do that, the opposition will have trouble staying with our offense.

- First half vs. second half SU stats: two pointers: from 5/14 to 17/32, threes: 7/12 to 6/9, frees: 7/16 to 3 of 4 rebs: 15-15 to 22-12, turnovers: 8 to 4, assists: 8 to 15. It was what this was doing vs. what it’s capable of.

- Buddy Buckets returned from the ether to score 18 second half points and wind up with 28. His second half began thusly: trey, missed jumper, O-reb, lay-up, trey, D-reb, jumper, 2 free throws, D-reb, turnover, jumper. That’s 14 points in 4:30 and the lead grew from 38-32 to 57-38. That’s what a star player is supposed to do.

- His brother Jimmy has now made our first score in every Dome game this year. He scored 13 points, led the team with 8 rebounds, (which he’d not been doing much of) and made 3 steals. That’s 11 possessions for us.

- Good Joe: 15 points, 7 assists and 5 steals. And his back-up, Sym Torrance added 7 more assists and a trey.

- Jesse Edwards, who should be able to dominate inside against a team like this, especially when we are hitting 62% from outside, was 0 for 1 at the half. He made all three shots in the second half, winding up with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. His back-up frank Anselem, added 2 points 5 rebounds and a block and Bourama Sidibe made his first appearance of the year in the late going and added a point and a rebound. So that was 12p 13r and 4b from the center position. I’ll take it.

- I didn’t hear the name Cole Swider much in the first half but he rallied for a 13 point night, including 3 for 3 from the arc.

- Benny Williams got to play 17 minutes and scored 6 points, grabbing 2 rebounds. Maybe the 17 minutes is the key stat. it was a beginning. We just haven’t had enough games like this this year.

- If we can beat Cornell, we can at least get a little breathing room going into the ACC season in extending the winning season streak, which we have to do before we can think of achieving any of our other goals.

6-5 with 20+ to go.

LET’S GO ORANGE!

Great write up. This really is the key to the season—at least becoming halfway decent on defense. I loved the defensive activity tonight in the second half.

Also, we have to get a bit more consistent on offense. Our offense is very good but we have a tendency to stagnate at times. That can’t happen considering our defensive deficiencies.
