- This game was better for Syracuse than another blow-out game. The team had to dig down and figure out how to beat an opponent that was playing very well. There are going to be a lot more games like this one than there will be blow-outs.
- Trevor Cooney finally became the Trevor Cooney everyone had hoped for. All his games to this point had been bad or not bad. This was the first game he really went off on somebody. It was timely because Cornell had a guy going off on us, Nolan Cressler, and our guy wound up outscoring their guy 27-23. Cressler went 8 for 16 and was 3 for 10 from three point range. Cooney was 10 for 12 and 7 for 8 from 3 point range. 12 shots to score 27 points is quite a rate. But what was better than that is how he scored. He not only hit open set shots but ran around screens to get open for quick pops like Andy Rautins, stopped and popped like Jimmy Lee and scored with a hand in his face like Gerry McNamara. Obviously he won’t always have a night like this but he seems primed to answer our questions about the 2 guard spot and the outside game.
- Cressler had 20 points with 4:17 left in the first half. He got three the rest of the way.
- Also, for the first time since I began watching him play for the Orange, I liked what I saw of Michael Gbinije. He looked like he did in those You-tube highlight films. He had 5 assists, one a Leo Rautins like laser-beam to someone under the basket, no turnovers, made 2 of 3 shots, including a three. He blocked a shot and made two steals. That’s two light bulbs that went on tonight.
- C. J. Fair had an up and down game but put on some moves I haven’t seen before. The best was a quick turn-around move that leads to an open shot or an open drive to the basket.
- B. J. Johnson had an interesting night. The first time he was sent in, he took off his warm-up shirt. Except he’d already taken it off and was now about to enter the game with no jersey. JB bellowed “Put your shirt on”. He did and he also went 3 for 5, scoring 7 points in 12 minutes. He would have had more but he came down on the out-of bounds line when making a trey. (Shouldn’t it count if he was in bounds when he let go of the ball?) He did make a three pointer that counted but more impressively, made a step-back two pointer. I love guys who can drive and then pull up for open shots. It’s a lost art. But keep your shirt on, B. J.
- Rakeem Christmas scored 10 second half points. Cooney’s outside shots opened things for lob passes to Rak and he converted, one on a wild running hook. If we have an outside game, maybe we’ll have an inside game.
- It wouldn't be a Syracuse basketball season without a suspension. It's nice that it's a one-gamer vs. Cornell. I hope that's it for the season. (I hope a lot of things.)
