- Monday, January 18th, 2016. The day we beat Duke in Cameron- for the first time.
- The way SU and Duke played in their last two games this seemed possible. The thing is, it stayed possible the whole game, allowing us to pull it out at the end. Duke never made that killer run with the Cameron crazies going nuts. Instead they were silently leaving the arena while our fans were chanting “Let’s Go Orange!” And celebrating with the team.
- When Tyler Roberson was recruited, we heard about what a “beast” on the boards he was and how athletic that body of his was. For two years of tentative play we wondered if this was the same player. We’re seeing that player we heard about now. He’s not as big as the opposition’s big men but he’s much quicker. It was his third straight double-double and his 20 rebounds were the most ever by an opposing player at Cameron. He ahs a five game run, (since Clemson) in which he’s played 161 minutes, (really four full games) and scored 67 points on 29 for 49 from the field, (59.1%) and pulling down 56 rebounds. That would be 17 points and 14 rebounds per 40 minutes.
- I’ve suggested that Mike Gbinije is not really a point guard but he sure looked like one tonight, dealing 9 assists when not going coast-to-coast to scored 14 points. And he did it in Cameron against Duke, a team that didn’t have a spot for him. The NBA is watching and we don’t have to be bothered by it as he’s a senior.
- Trevor Cooney and Malachi Richardson missed 22 of 31 shots but the ones they made came at a critical time of the game, including the treys that turned a 47-48 game into a 53-48 game. We kept that lead right to the end.
- Tyler Lydon struggled on defense and only shot 3 for 9 but he nonetheless is beginning to reassert himself with 8 points and 9 rebounds, including a couple of big threes.
- Both teams shot poorly overall but we got hot from outside at the end to win it hitting 7 second half three pointers and going 11 for 23 (47.8%) overall compared to the Blue Devils who never really got going at 10 for 37. That’s one less three pointer but 14 more misses.
- And we were getting the rebounds, 49-42. We also avoid turnovers, 8-9, so we were +6 in possessions.
- The ref’s let the teams play, calling only 24 fouls, (at Wake they called 46). The two teams only went to the line 17 times. Duke actually got called for more fouls than we did, 14-15.
- Our two point shooting was horrendous, (14 for 48, 29%) but we still got one more bucket inside than they did (13 for 25), largely because of our 26 offensive rebounds. That’s 52% of our misses.
- I've see the very end of the game several times now and I'm glad the refs didn't call that last foul, even thought it would only have been our 6th foul and thus wouldn't have mattered. The Duke guy launched himself at two Syracuse players trying to draw a foul and they just backed away and let him fall flat on his face.
- At the end, JB had his jacket on.
13-7 (3-4) with 11+ to go…and only 4 more wins needed to guarantee our 46th consecutive winning season!
