- We want two things from every game: to win and to emerge confident of more victories. The Indiana game was a wonderful basketball game and we won it but not because we’d solved any of our problems. We were out-rounded by 15. We countered that with 18 steals but how often are you going to have 18 steals? (We had 5 today). We gave up 110 points in 50 minutes, 88 in the first 40. We were glad our team won but what did it tell us about how we’re going to win future games? Today we played good defense, (made great by their lousy shooting) and won the battle the boards, 41-40, (which was good because we were -3 in turnovers). Villanova will be a big problem but we can move forward knowing that we have improved and that the best is yet to come.
- A big factor is that Jim Boeheim abandoned his 2-3 zone for a 1-3-1 look, (Matt Park called it the ‘I’ formation. It creates openings on the wing but it puts a defender in the high post and also aids rebounding. Who says Jim Boeheim never changes anything?
- The highlight of the game came when Cole Swider had to make those two free throws to get us up three and he looked at the Syracuse bench, winked and sank both without a problem. He had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, giving us two double-doubles.
- Jesse Edwards continued to be a major player, scoring a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. He also had 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.
- Joe Girard played a pugnacious game, doing what he wanted when he wanted, including a 30+ three when we were down 14-25. He wound up with 16 points, a big total in a game like this, 3 rebs, 2 assists and 2 steals with only 2 turnovers against the pressure.
- Jimmy Boeheim didn’t have a great stat line: 13p, 4r, 1s but I like the way eh fits in with this team. He’s our best at driving to the basket in a spread-out situation and scoring, (Symir Torrence can drive to the basket but he can’t score). Wil Edwards in the paint and Buddy, Joe and Cole on the outside, Jimmy has plenty of room to maneuver and that gives u 5 guys who can score. Also, Jimmy scored our first point for the 9th time in 10 games this year, (including the exhibitions). It’s not because his dad is setting up plays for him. It’s his skills and his motor that lets him do that.
- Torrence only scored one point but he slices through a defense like a hot knife through butter and he had 5 assists in 12 minutes.
- FranK Anselem had what looked like his best game, although his only stat was 4 rebounds in 8 minutes. He didn’t score but I don’t think our defense slipped a notch when he replaced Jesse.
5-3 with 23+ to go.
LET’S GO ORANGE!
