- This is actually going to be fun for a change. I’ve grown used to an SU football or basketball game ruining my college football Saturday but not last week and not today. - We got a ‘must’ win against a conference opponent on the road – and got it by 34 points. If anything, we can play better than that. It was all Elijah Hughes in the first half and one by one, other players stepped up. If we can get everyone on the same page, we’ll be tough to beat. - We are a different team when the shots are falling than when they aren’t. OK, that’s obvious but I think it’s more true of this team than most because our offense is so predicated on the jumps shot. We needed one guy to get us going so the fire could spread to the others and that guy was Elijah Hughes, who had his best career game, hitting his first four three pointers, (for a 12-4 lead after the jackets scored first), on his way to 6 for 11 from there. He made all four two point shots and all seven free throws for 33 points. He also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists a steal and another emphatic block. - The next thing was to get Buddy Boeheim going and that finally happened in the second half to hammer the nail all the way in. He hit four jumpers in a row, three of them from three point range to take us from 48-28 to 59-32. - Then Joe Girard hit a couple of threes in a row to take it from 65-42 to 71-42. He wound up with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and steal in 22 minutes. If that’s a bad game… When we get all three guys going, we’re tough to beat. You can’t win the battle without the artillery. (Go to about the 12 minute mark.) - While our big guns got going, Tech’s big gun, Michael Devoe scored 7 points on 2 for 12 shooting. He had 1 point in the first half. Nothing draws JB’s ire more than the other team’s best shooter being left open and we made him disappear tonight. - Marek Dolezaj hustled his way to 11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. AS JB noted in his presser, when we hit shots, it gives Marek room to maneuver. I love it when he pulls down a defensive rebound and starts dribbling down court in one motion. I also like when he makes 5 of 6 free throws. - Bourama Sidibe was a demon on defense with 5 steals and a block and added 8 rebounds and 5 points, although he blew a lay-up on a beautiful pick and roll with Howard Washington, (and poor Quincy Guerrier got one of his fouls trying to get the ball back). Still, the move Bourma made to set up the shot was one of those things we’d never have seen from Paschal Chukwu. - Howard Washington came in to spell Girard when he was in the coach’s doghouse for a couple of traveling calls and played very well, accumulating 8 assists to 1 turnover in 17 minutes. Joe is a flashy freshman that they have to guard. Howard is a solid guy who has bene here three years and clearly has the deep respect of everyone on the team. His problem is that he’s not a scorer sp they don’t have to guard him. But they make an interesting combo. - Jesse Edwards played only 7 minutes but had 7 points on 3 for 3 shooting with 3 rebounds and a blocked shot. He may only be playing in “garbage time” he sure looks like he could help us when the bullets are flying. - We won the boards 40-30, had 23 assists in 29 baskets, blocked 6 shots to 2, had 14 steals to 8 and had 21 fast break points to 10. JB: “That's the way we like to play and I think we can play that way.” - We look talented. 5-4 with 22+ to be done LET’S GO ORANGE!
