- We needed a win and we got one. 3-2 going into a bye and ACC play. Game was never in doubt. Mission: accomplished.

- We wound up with the numbers we expected. We won by 38 points. We out-gained them 429-138, a 3-1 margin. We held them to 18 yards rushing.

- Tommy DeVito threw for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns to four different receivers.

- Taj Harris, who had been playing like he was Devin Butler in disguise. Today he looked like the Taj Harris we saw last year: a smooth, fast, athletic receiver with good hands. On one play he seemed to have borrowed a page from a figure skater, whirling around 360 degrees three times on his way to the sideline, looking to create an opening. I guess we’ll call that a “triple Harris”. Later, on the same play, he found an opening and went 47 yards for a touchdown that ended any suspense.

- Maybe Luke Benson does have, as the coach put it on his radio show this week, “10.75 speed in the 700”. On that 70 yard play he looked as if, as a tight end, he was faster than anybody Holy Cross had, including the defensive backs. When he crossed the 20, he was the only guy in the picture. Aaron Hackett had a couple of catches, one for a touchdown. He and Luke have 14 catches for 192 yards and 4 scores in 5 games. Last year our tight ends, including the blue chipper, Ravian Pierce had 21 catches for 154 yards and 4TDs in 13 games. Only five of those catches returned for this year, 4 of them Hackett’s so I made the mistake of saying in my season preview that “there’s not much there” and that “it’s a good thing Dino Babers doesn’t throw to the tight ends much.” At this point they seem to be a major weapon for us.

- Sterling Hofrichter has bene here for four years but he still has the ability to amaze us. Dino sent him in for a 52 yard field goal, (even though Andre Szymt has hit one from 54). Sterling kicked a line drive that would have scored if a brick wall was erected in front of the goal posts. He just gets better and better.

- Sean Riley has had a quiet season, (16 catches after 64 last year and 105 yards in punt reruns and no scores after 264 yards and a TD last year), showed some spark with a determined 34 yard return in heavy traffic. Maybe that will get him going.

- I thought our tackling was excellent, despite the two targeting calls. Holy Cross lacked weapons but even when they had a successful play, the first guy on the scene made the tackle over and over: arms out, heads up, get control and bring him down. And the pursuit was great, with plenty of ‘hats in the picture’ on every play.

- In the first half, we held them to 107 yards and 3 points. We were using a basic defense, relying on the front four to get pressure. In the second half Brian Ward decided to bring the pressure and they had 31 yards and no points. We wound up with 5 sacks and 10 TFLs.

3-2 and 7+ to do

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
