- We won a tough game over a good team. Iona didn’t have height but their players were strong, athletic and could shoot. Brian Higgins, subbing for Matt Park, pointed out that in the last 20 years, the Gaels are second among major college teams in this state in wins with 416. Jimmy Satalin suggested they are the kind of team we would face in the first round of an NCAA tournament, so it was a step up in completion and we passed the test.

- Paschal Chukwu was a revelation. He defended the basket well, (only 3 blocks but 8-10 shots not taken because PC was there with his hands up. He had strong 10 rebounds and scored 5 points on a couple of dunks. It was the first time he out-performed Bourama Sidibe, who had 2 points, 4 rebs and 2 blocks in 18 minutes, only four less than Chukwu. But the big thing is: we’ve got two centers who can play. We’ll have to wait until we see them against genuine big men before we know how much of a strength this is but it’s a lot better than it looked in the pre-season.

- The question of whether Tyus Battle will be comfortable being the #1 option has bene answered: he loves it. His full portfolio of talents was on display tonight. He hit from beyond the arc. He drove to the basket, almost maniacally, split defenders and scored on a variety of lay-ups, pull-ups and floaters and scored 28 points on 11 for 19 shooting. He’s a spectacular talent and watching him this year is going to be fun.

- Frank Howard is a different player this year. He’s an aggressive, confident scorer. There were times I wasn’t sure if a play was made by Battle or Howard. He was 2 for 4 from beyond the arc, one of which looked to be nearly 30 feet away. I also like the way he sounds in this interview: ….a confident leader of a young team.

- Marek Dolezaj reminds me of a quicker version of Kristoff Ongenaet, a huge fan favorite from a decade ago. He may not have the mostest but he gets there the firstest and it allows him to grab rebounds, loose balls and steals. And he can use his length to make some lay-ups. He’s still shy about shooting the ball or driving to the basket, (including one time when he was totally unguarded in the paint), so I can’t access his offensive capabilities. But he made the plays down the stretch that won the game.

- We have a 9 man team where everyone can contribute and nobody is painful to watch. I like the look of this highlight film: Highlights | Syracuse vs. Iona

2-0 with 29+ to go

LET’S GO ORANGE!

I beg to differ on one point - we don't have a 9 man team where everybody can contribute, because that's not how JB rolls -
never has, never will.

Last night he cut it back to 7.5 guys, with Marek edging out Moyer for #7.
HoWash clearly #9.

I was so heartened by Chukwu’s play and long to write a song about him if he can step up and be a hero at some point this year. I do feel irked that his name is Choook Wu instead of Chuck Wu, as I would have a lot more zest with the latter. I suspect he is having ever so much more fun than last year! He has had a lot of “failure” and frustration and it seems - hopefully - that he has finally gotten into the learning curve.

John Lennon would have loved Chewie's name:

I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, coo coo Chukwu

Besides, we don't want too much of anything Chucks around our centers... or vice versa. :p

I think Moyer and Washington have the ability to make contributions this year.

I just got this year's Media Guide and they now have the stats back to 1980-81. Here is how many players averaged 10 minutes per game:

1980-81 10 players
1981-82 8 players
1982-83 9 players
1983-84 7 players
1984-85 7 players
1985-86 10 players
1986-87 8 players
1987-88 8 players
1988-89 7 players
1989-90 8 players
1990-91 8 players
1991-92 8 players
1992-93 7 players
1993-94 7 players
1994-95 8 players
1995-96 7 players
1996-97 9 players
1997-98 6 players
1998-99 10 players
1999-00 8 players
2000-01 7 players
2001-02 8 players
2002-03 8 players
2003-04 8 players
2004-05 9 players
2005-06 8 players
2006-07 8 players
2007-08 8 players
2008-09 8 players
2009-10 8 players
2010-11 8 players
2011-12 10 players
2012-13 9 players
2013-14 8 players
2014-15 8 players
2015-16 7 players
2016-17 9 players

Every year, JB plays everybody in the early season, (depending on the opponent), sees who is likely to make a positive contribution and who his best combinations are and goes with those players once the conference season starts. The number of players who pass that test varies from season to season and so the number of guys who made the above list varied from season to season. Injuries can cut down the rotation and we’ve had some bad luck with those in recent seasons, leading to the illusion that JB prepares to play with only 6-7 guys vs. 8-9 guys. But his average over those 37 years is actually 8 guys.

I don’t think anybody on this team will play themselves out of the rotation. Washington is a freshman with three veteran guards ahead of him so we might not see a lot of him but I certainly wouldn’t groan to see him come into the game. And I expect Moyer to get significant playing time this year.

Brilliant! Will you be Lennon to my McCartney?

This may have been your strangest post.
But, i'm still a fan!

I just love shouting "CHOOK-WOOOOO!" every time he makes a play. It sounds better than "SID-E-BEE!", although "BOURAMA!!" is pretty good.

iona isn't that good this year.check the stats and they're shooting like 20 % deep.

Regarding frank howard, I distinctly remember him starting off really solid last year as well in the preconference.

I thought Chukwu was much more assertive in this game and that's a great development. However, a lot of his rebounds were just a result of him being so much rather than everyone else. I remember several rebounds where he didn't even jump, just reached up flat footed and grabbed it. That's great against Iona but won't work against P5.

Really excited with what i see from brisset

Not having seen the stats or anything, I still want to say that they are sqewed by preseaon games. Players 9 and above may get 10 minutes during OOC games an d not even play during conference games. Their stats will say 10+/game but if you divide minutes by ALL the games, their numbers might drop significantly a not really apply.

You are probably right about players 9 and above. 8 guys you are willing to use in close games is pretty good depth, especially if some of them can play more than one positon. I doubt very many teams go deeper than that. It still takes a lot of playing time to not play very much during conference games and still average 10 minutes a game for the season. I agree that it would be more relevant if Cuse.com averaged the numbers per total games. It would be even more relevant to average it per games available. It would take a ton of research to determine for what games players were injured, ill or suspended. So let’s not average them at all and look at it with 300 minutes as the standard:

1980-81 8 players
1981-82 8 players
1982-83 9 players
1983-84 7 players
1984-85 7 players
1985-86 8 players
1986-87 7 players
1987-88 7 players
1988-89 8 players
1989-90 8 players
1990-91 7 players
1991-92 7 players
1992-93 7 players
1993-94 7 players
1994-95 7 players (one had 299 but rules are rules)
1995-96 7 players
1996-97 7 players
1997-98 7 players
1998-99 8 players
1999-00 8 players
2000-01 7 players
2001-02 8 players
2002-03 8 players
2003-04 8 players
2004-05 9 players
2005-06 7 players
2006-07 8 players
2007-08 8 players
2008-09 8 players
2009-10 7 players
2010-11 9 players
2011-12 9 players
2012-13 9 players
2013-14 7 players
2014-15 8 players
2015-16 7 players
2016-17 7 players

So I guess it’s correct to say that JB’s rotation is typically 7, (18 times), 8 (14 times) or 9 (5 times) players. (Average: 7.6 players) If anything he seems to be using more players in recent years. But I think it’s based on two things: the number of players who show the coach they can be relied on to contribute in a competitive game and the quality of the top players, who Jim will be reluctant to pull from the game. He’s said that all 9 guys will play this year, (he’s not going to say at this point that anybody won’t play). I think, barring injuries, this will be an 8 man rotation with Washington being a freshman behind three veteran guards.

For comparison’s sake, let’s look at last season’s AP Top 25, (stats from ESPN):
#1 Villanova 7 players
#2 Gonzaga 8 players
#3 Kansas 7 players
#4 Arizona 9 players
#5 North Carolina 9 players
#6 Kentucky 9 players
#7 Duke 7 players
#8 UCLA 8 players
#9 Oregon 8 players
#10 Louisville 8 players
#11 SMU 6 players
#12 Baylor 8 players
#13 West Virginia 10 players
#14 Notre Dame 7 players
#15 Purdue 7 players
#16 Iowa State 8 players
#16 Florida State 10 players (tied in ranking)
#18 Cincinnati 8 players
#19 Wichita State 10 players
#20 Florida 9 players
#21 Butler 9 players
#22 St. Mary’s 8 players
#23 Michigan 8 players
#24 Virginia 10 players
#25 Wisconsin 8 players

That’s 1 team with 6 players, 4 teams with 7 players, 10 with 8 players, 5 with 9 players and 4 with 10 players, an average of 8.0 players. The Top Ten teams tended to use fewer players than #11-25, probably because their top players were All-Americans. Jim Boeheim doesn’t seem like such an outlier in his rotation practices.
