- We’re 1-0 and beat a team that’s probably better than people think. JB thinks they could win their conference and get to the NCAAs. This win could be a (small) feather in our cap on selection Sunday.
- In the first half we showed what we are capable of defensively, forcing 12 turnovers and shutting out Tim Kempton from the field, holding Lehigh to 12 points.
- People view Chinoso Obokoh as a waste of a scholarship but he had 4 blocks, 4 rebounds and a steal in 15 minutes going up against a good 6-10 center.
- Malachi Richardson was Mr. Big Shot, hitting two threes to open the game and two more when we were really struggling in the second half and the lead got down to single digits. He scored 14 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and had 3 steals.
- When I first heard of Tyler Lydon I thought he was just a skinny jump-shooter. He doesn’t look skinny to me and he hasn’t been shooting well. In fact, he’s doing everything else. He only scored 4 points but pulled down 11 rebounds, stole 3 passes and blocked two shots. He’s our most active big man, our best rebounder and four best defensive center. Now if he could only shoot…
- But Michael Gbinije is clearly the star of this team, (or the closest thing to one). He didn’t have a great game, (2 for 9 from the arc, 4 turnovers), but he did lead in scoring with 16 points and got some big baskets when we needed them. Here’s an interesting stat: only one SU player had more than one made basket inside the arc. It was G-man and he had three of them.
- Lehigh was 2 for 17 from outside. I don’t think that’s just a matter of luck. With all of our big, mobile perimeter players, we can shut down the perimeter, even when we have to deal with a big man like Kempton.
- We were 10 for 1 2 from the foul line, (83%). I don’t think that’s a matter of luck, either. We’ve got plenty of good shooters and we aren’t going into the big men, who typically can’t shoot as well as the outside guys. This should be one of our better free throw shooting teams.
1-0 and 30 to go…
