[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 3091592, member: 289"] - There are ugly games and ugly performances but there are no ugly wins. Many a great season has started out with a stumbling victory. Coach Mac used to say that the players listened better after a win than a loss. Dino said that players hear you until the first game: then they listen to you. There will be a lot of listening this week. - Dino didn’t seemed too upset by the offensive performance in the post-game press conference. He said part of it was nerves. Part of it was that Hugh freeze threw a defense at us that the players hadn’t seen before or practiced against.it was designed to take away the long pass and it did. It may be that Mike Locksley and Dabo Sweeney will conclude form this that our passing game is not a threat and play us straight up which could produce very different results. - Whatever our problems our defense wasn’t going to lose. Kendall Coleman had a Freeneyeque game, blowing through blocks and even double-teams to make play after play. The defense as a whole had its hand on the forehead of Liberty’s offense the whole game. “Buckshot” Calvert was a 3,000 yard quarterback last year. He was on the run the whole game and was 20 for 39 for 234 yards with 0 TDs and 2 interceptions. His passes were buckshot. Frankie Hickson was a 1,000 yard rusher and Joshua Mack was, too, at Maine before he transferred to Liberty. They totaled 31 yards on 13 carries and no scores. Antonio Gandy-Golden was a 1,000 yard receiver last year. he got off a 56 yarder early in the game, (which was then negated by a fumble)> the rest of the time he caught 5 passes for 63 yards and no scores, including 1 pass for 4 yards in the second half. - I hate to say it but our offensive line got better after Sam Heckel went out and Airon Servias returned to his old center position. It enabled us to do what teams have done to use in recent years: grind out a victory on the ground. We ran for 192 yards, most of it in the second half and three different running backs scored touchdowns with Moe Neal’s 42 yard burst the clincher. - Another turning point came when Dino put two of our talented running backs in the backfield at the same time. the defense didn’t know who to tackle that. Just sayin… - Sterling Hofrichter blasted 6 punts for an average of 49.2 yards. He also has master the art of kicking the ball high and just short of the end zone so the other team will return it - and get tackled almost immediately. Andre Szmyt continued to be automatic making all four of his kicks, including a 45 yard field goal. - It was good to see Antwan Cordy in there, flying around, making tackles like the days of old. it was also nice to see Andre Cisco pick up where he left off with another interception. 1-0 and 11+ to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
