- In the post game interview, Coach Shafer was appraised of all the positive statics his team had rolled up. He would have none of it: we lost. The stats don’t matter. In a sense he’s right- it’s all about wins and losses and we really needed this one to set up what next week’s game could have been. But he was also wrong. I said in my question to him on his radio show that each game has two goals: to win and to create optimism that we will win again. The Villanova game achieved only the first goal. The Central Michigan achieved both. This game achieved the second. It is possible to lose a game where you gain 589 yards to the opposition’s 369 but it isn’t going to happen very often. If we can continue to put up numbers anything like that, there are victories to come. - The game greatly resembled the 2012 Northwestern game, which we lost 41-42 but out-gained the Wildcats by 596-337. We also lost that on turnovers and special teams plays. But we wound up 8-5 and winning a bowl game by 24 points. You’d take that right now, wouldn’t you? - We ran for 370 yards. Terrel Hunt doesn’t have break-away speed but he’s big and strong and also is nifty in the way he picks his way through the field and the cuts he makes. On one play Matt Park even said he looked like a point guard dribbilng a basketball through the defense. He ran for an incredible 156 yards on 21 carries and 2 TDs after going for 92 yards and 3TDs last week. He’s a huge weapon. - The Hyphenated backfield of Prince-Tyson Gulley and Adonis Ameen-Moore combined for another 206 yards on 23 carries. Our offense looked a lot like Auburn during their run to the title game last year. That’s been our problem: We’ve been running a Baylor-like offense with Auburn-type talent. Now we seem to be in the right mode and we’re pretty hard to stop. If Hunt can regain the passing touch he showed in Mount Pleasant, we have some pleasant games ahead. - We keep waiting for a receiver to break-out and become a go-to guy. How about #84, Ben Lewis? He seemed to have a good combination of size, speed and hands and, more than that, a desire to get to the ball and catch it every time. - You gotta love Shaf. You know those silly halftime interviews with the coach where they give the canned answers and reveal nothing? Shaf, when asked what he was going to tell his team at halftime said: “We’re plan’ hard but we’re playin’ STUPID!. WE GOTTA GET OUR TOGETHER!” 2-1 with 9+ to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!!
