- Despite being way behind in the statistics, we managed to stay in this game virtually the whole way. If not for the chop block call that negated “Ace Cornelius” TD catch, the game would have been in doubt until the end. The game was frustrating at times but always entertaining. - Zach Mahoney ran the offense well, ran the ball hard when he got the opportunity and made some good throws among his several bad ones. All in all, a pretty good performance for a back-up. - It was nice to see the oft-injured Cornelius have a big game, very late in his career. It’s good to have him available since Ismael is hurting. - The defense had some great plays on first and second down. Parris Bennett and Zaire Franklin both had 11 tackles while Rodney Williams and Daivon Ellison had 10 each. But I was most impressed with Ted Taylor, who always seemed to be where the ball was, Including a play near the goal line where Matthew Dayes bobbled the ball, grabbed it with one hand while going down and had Taylor grab it away from him just as he was hitting the ground. Gedney said that no matter how they called it, it probably wouldn’t have been over-turned. Unfortunately they called Daye down. State scored on the next play. Dino said after the game that he doesn’t make enough to afford the fines for complaining about it. - Special teams was, for a change, a delight to watch. Sean Miller had some productive returned. Cornelius made a monster tackle as a gunner on a punt. Cole Murphy seemed to get his confidence back and kicked a couple of no-doubters. But the big star was Sterling Hofrichter, who played as if he had an ‘S’ on his chest, rather than his helmet. He’s mastered that “rugby punt” technique and was sending howitzer shots over everybody’s head. He averaged 47.3 yards per punt, with a high of 65 yards. That one was over 60 yards in the air. And he ahd hang time too: there was on punt returned by state for -1 yards, thanks to Cornelius. 4-6 with 2+ to go LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
