- Another second half comeback for a team that had not been known as a second half team. We came out like we were shot out of a cannon, making our first 11 shots of the second half. Our first miss wasn’t until 9:58 was left, so we went 10 minutes without missing a field goal!
- We built up an 11 point lead only to see the Wolfpack close to within 1 point at 72-71 with 8:09 left. Matt Park said to Jimmy Satalin “You don’t want to fall behind in the second ahlf on the road” and actually predicted defeat if we let it happen. Satalin agreed. But it never happened. We out-scored the pack 17-11 down the stretch, making enough plays on both ends to put the game away and reach .500 at 11-11.
- You can ben a two-pointer to a three-point fight. It’s like a football game where each team gained 400 yards but one rushed for 300 yards and one passed for 300 yards. Passing is more exciting but the team that ran for 300 yards probably won that game, maybe easily. If a basketball team can’t be stopped form inside and their opponent can’t be stopped form outside, the team that can’t be stopped inside is the likely winner. So much for modern metrics. The reason is that the team scoring three pointers will have a harder time staying hot from that distance while the team scoring two pointer is also going to score from the line. State was 10 for 20 from the arc in the first half, 6 for 19 in the second. We actually wound up with a much better shooting percent age from three, 58% to 41%. Our front line went 7 for 9, 8 for 9 and 7 for 9 while we out-score the pack from the free throw line 14-6.
- We are one of ten teams that have started the same five guys in every game this season. Of those we are the only team to have all five starters in double figures. In this game, they were 11 points away from having all five guys score 20 points. In the 2009 6OT game vs. Connecticut, where we played 70 minutes, four guys scored over 20 points for us. Our bench was scoreless but there’s a difference between a bench that didn’t score when we needed them and a bench that didn’t score when we didn’t need them.
- Cole Swider is clearly our X-factor player, the one who can make the difference that elevates the team. In the last two games, he’s scored 37-point s on 15 for 20 shooting, including all six three point attempts. He was also our leading rebounder tonight with 8.
- That would make Joe Girard the ‘Y’ factor. He’s scored 30 in those last two games. He’s only shot 8 for 21 but it 5 for 8 from three and, even more importantly, 11 for 11 from the line, 7 for 7 tonight. Also important: 8 assists to 1 turnover against a pressure defense.
- Jesse Edwards was unstoppable until a late blocked shot. He was 8 for 9 from the field, scored 19 points, added 6 rebounds, 3 blocks 2 assists and a steal.
- The Boeheims were the Boeheims. Buddy didn’t go off like he did vs. Wake Forest. But the brothers totaled 33 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. It was team win. Jim Boeheim said he loves balance and he got it tonight.
This is never going to be a strong defensive team but when we are functioning well of offense, we just need to play defense well enough that the other team can’t keep up. That’s what we did in the second half, out-scoring the Wolfpack 47-37.
11-11 with 9+ to go.
