- We got a win we badly needed. This schedule is so tough it puts tremendous pressure on the team to win these games that are not against the top teams because we have to have the victories to have a chance at a bowl game. There will actually be less pressure next week because nobody expects to beat or even compete with Clemson. Anything good that happens then will be on the positive side of the ledger. No such luxury today: we had to get it done.
- We came out in an empty backfield, firing the ball: did Dino get that idea from the question I called in Thursday night? I think it’s much more likely that he had already planned to do this , which is why his answer was so guarded.
- Six guys caught at least 2 passes and four of them caught at least 5. This is what I have expected from Baber’s offense all along: make them cover everybody and the whole field. Haivng two guys set receiving records with 90+ catches is interesting but I’d rather have 5 guys with 50+ catches. If they have to cover everything, they will wind up covering nothing.
- We finally are throwing over the middle of the field and to Ravian Pierce, the big-time tight end recruit. Now we need to throw intermediate and deep routes over the middle. Then they will have to cover everywhere and everybody.
- Eric Dungey, after a shaky first half, put up some fancy numbers, passing for 365 yards and running for 48 more, a 413 yard game. He passed for two scores and ran for another with no turnovers, (neither team had one.) That gives him 168 completions in 261 attempts (64.4%) for 1,802 years with 9TDs and 4 interceptions. He’s also run 80 times for 329 yards and 6 TDs, (he’s run for a touchdown in every game so far). We are 6 games in so you can double those numbers and get a peak as to what his season numbers will be. They will be hard for the national press to ignore.
- All the throwing finally opened things up- a little – for the running game. Dontae Strickland got 81 tough yards on 25 carries, including several first downs. And, for the first time we essentially closed out the game with a long, grinding, time consuming drive on the ground. I didn’t know we had it in us.
- But the SU defense sealed the game with a sack. They also stopped the Panthers in 10 of 13 third downs. Meanwhile we converted 8 of 20 third downs and 3 for 5 fourth downs. Put that together and it’s 11 of 20 conversions. It helped us outgain Pitt 500-358.
- Parris Bennett is putting together incredible numbers. He had 14 tackles, 9 solo and one for aa 3 yard loss. He’s now got 56 tackles on the season, 6, (well, 5 ½) for a loss. Zaire Franklin, our great middle linebacker, had 40 and 2 TFLs by comparison.
- Our tackling today was great. There had to be 10-12 plays where a guy had nothing but turf behind him and made the play. They had their arms out and wrapped people up or went low and knocked them off their feet. Hawk Tackling!
- Cole Murphy did a terrific job of kicking the ball into the end zone, neutralizing Pitt’s great return man Quadree Henderson, (who has 6 kick returns for scores).
- Clemson looked vulnerable today, beating Wake Forest only 28-14. QB Kelly brant hurt his ankle today and may or may not play against us. Hmmmmm….
3-3 with 6+ to go
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
