- As I got out of my car and made my way toady the buses in south Manley, I heard a voice in mid-conversation from across the parking lot that sounded familiar. I got closer and closer, listening and finally lined up behind the source of the voice to board the buses. When the man started complaining about the size of the crowd for todays’ game, I knew I was the standing behind the legendary “Pat” who called into ever local radio show with a detailed analysis of the basketball team and its problems and prospects. I introduced myself and he was glad to see me too. We spend the trip to the Dome braking everything down and building it back up again. If only Jim Boeheim did everything we said, we’d win the national championship for sure. Of course our combined plans would take about 8 players but we’d probably win the title if they let us use 8 players. Anyway, it was nice to meet Pat, a nice guy and as devout an SU fan as there is. - I met a couple more enthusiastic fans at the gate to the Dome. They smelled like a brewery but were really happy and optimistic. They looked at my SU sweater and suggested I must be a “Superfan”. They asked me how long I’d bene going to the Dome. I told them since it opened in 1980. “You’ve been at the Dome since 1980???” I told them I go home sometimes. They were very happy and having a good time already. It may not have lasted but I hope they got home OK. - Ah, the game. I’ll repeat something I said about the Louisville game: Pitt beat us go=for the reason Pitt always beats us. It doesn’t necessarily indicate how we will fare against NC State or even UNC and Florida State. Those games will all have their challenges but Pitino/Louisville and Dixon/Pittsburgh know how to attack Syracuse and they match up very well, (for them), against us so they are very difficult teams for us to beat. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we’d going to lose 4-5 in a row. It’s not just –it’s them, too. - Against a very physical defensive team, Tyler Lydon was amazing, hitting 8 of 12 shots, including 4 three pointers. He made every kind of shot: treys, dunks, short jumpers, twisting lau-ups. As Boeheim said : “Without him, we wouldn’t have scored 35 point s.” (At least he kept ti clean this time). - DaJuan Coleman actually had one of his better games with 8 points and 8 rebounds plus a stela and two blocks. In 23 minutes. He just didn’t get enough help. - Franklin Howard, in 14 minutes, had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists a steal and 1 turnovers. The turnover came when his teammates deserted him and he got triple-teamed at media court. It was their fault, not his. He got yanked for taking – and missing a 15 footer JB didn’t want him take. On the radio, Jimmy Satalin had a different view: “He’s got to take that shot. He’s a division 1 basketball player. Everybody else was covered.” That, of course, is Frank’s downside: when he’s out there the defense can focus on preventing the other players from getting the ball or shooting it. But that will be the case until Frank can prove he can score, too. In the meantime, he has the look of a real point guard. 18-10 (8-7) with 3+ to go… LET’S GO ORANGE!
