- Many SU fans have given up on this team, (even the guy who sits in my aisle and keeps going back to the concession stand for more beer and chips and yet is somehow still thinner than I am was absent), but the players and coaches haven’t given up. They play hard and have been competitive in every game, including against teams ranked #8 and #25 in the country. If the fans had the attitude of the players and coaches, the Dome would indeed be the loud hose.

- Dungey and the offense made sweet music in the first half. They only ran one option I saw and he was making smart decisions and great throws. As a result, the real playmakers, Fredericks, Phillips, Ismael and Estime were winding up with the football, not Dungey. Eric ran the ball only 6 times, not 17-18 as in the last two games. Fredericks got the ball 14 times and got 100 yards. Phillips got 9 touches and produced 88 yards and a score. Ismael caught 7 balls for 114 yards and a score. Estime only had 3 catches for 22 yards. If only Eric had seen him on that second interception. This is the way the offense is supposed to run, with the option just being one of many things we throw at the other team and Dungey making a couple of scrambled and maybe a couple of draws. When it’s just him vs. the defense, that’s not enough.

- I love the touch and accuracy Dungey was putting on balls in the first half. Maybe the prettiest pass was the one he dropped into Estime’s arms down the sideline. Unfortunately Brisley had pushed off so the play was negated. But it was a beautiful pass. Eric threaded the needle several other times, as well. He gets the ball away quickly and on target but throws a very catchable ball. I haven’t had this much confidence in a quarterback- his judgement and his skills- since McNabb. You just know he’s going to make something happen.

- Ismael had a break-out game, making catches in traffic and showing some moves. He had the one very bad drop but was superb otherwise.

- Tyler Boyd is quite weapon: 12 catches for 93 yards, 4 runs for 34 yards and a 38 yard pass completion. But we kept him out of the end zone.

- Our defense was hugely improved, despite the disappointing finale, (and they had Panthers stopped until the fake punt). They pressured the quarterback, didn’t give up anything deep and made the visitors earn everything they got. You can hardly say that about the previous two games. If we get this defense back up to par and match it with this offense, look out!

- I think I’m in love with Antwan Cordy. He’s a little guy but every ounce is a football player. He knows where the ball is and what to do when he gets there. He’s a terrific open-field tackler and makes big plays. I also thought Zaire Franklin had his best game so far.

- It was strange that Pitt didn’t test us deep but I think our pass rush and blitzes had something to do with that. We had a couple of sacks and a number of hurries. It may also have helped that Whigham wasn’t on the field that much. We may have moved on from Julian.

- Pitt is 6-1 and ranked in the top 25 because they’ve won their close games. We’re 3-4 because we’ve been losing ours. All this talk about not having enough talent to compete or we need a whole new scheme or coaching staff is bunk. We’ve been competitive in every game, including two against ranked teams. We just need to play this game a little bit better. It really does come down to 2-3 plays a game. We’ve got to learn how to win those plays and use them to win the game. Pitt, a much more experienced team, has learned how to do that, Last year they hadn’t: they lost four games by 5 points or less. We’ve got a bunch of talented freshman and sophomores running around on both units. I’m hopeful they aren’t done winning this year but next year we could have a season like the one the Panthers are having.

- Meanwhile we’ve got a frustrating but hardly dull team to root for. Every game has been close and full of exciting or controversial plays to talk about. They are worthy of our support. I left the Dome feeling better about this team than I did walking in.

3-4 with 5 or 6 to be!

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!!

One last thought before we move on to FSU; while watching the game, not once did I think Pitt had more talent than us.

One other thing SWC, I thought of you when Pitt lined up in the classic fullback/halfback formation and easily got the first down on short yardage.
