- The first half featured an opening three-point play Marek Dolezaj an amazing performance by Buddy Boeheim, who seems to be getting better with every game, followed by a good fill-in job by Joe Girard and nothing else. Buddy and Joe were 9/15 from the field but their teammates were 2 for 11. I felt having one guy who was hot wouldn’t be enough to hold off San Diego State, who had to be better in the second half, (and they were with 44 points). We had to get everyone involved in the second half and we did. Everybody seemed to have “That Happy Feeling”.
- Buddy capabilities are growing at an alarming rate. It kind of reminds me of the premiere of the original Star Trek: ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’. “After the Enterprise attempts to cross the Great Barrier at the edge of the galaxy, crew members Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner develop "godlike" psychic powers which threaten the safety of the crew and of humanity itself.” The president should be informed. Actually, he probably already knows.
- In his last 8 games, Buddy is averaging 24.1ppg and hitting 49% of his threes. In the post season, (ACCT and this game, he’s averaging 29.3 and hitting 60% from three. And he’s hitting them from way out with defenders all over him and a smile on his face. Somebody said that he’ll be a pre-season All-American next year. That’s because he’s playing like an All-American this year. The thought of two Boeheims being on next year’s team is getting more and more intriguing.
- But Buddy picked up a second foul with 5:37 left in the first half and SU only up 19-18, (Buddy having scored our last 16 points). JB pulled his son and put Joe Girard back in the game, partnering with Kadari Richardson. That’s when we built up the lead we never lost. Joe scored 10 of the 13 points we scored the rest of the half on three treys and foul shot. He gabbed a couple of rebounds, too. He had 5 for the half with 3 assists: he would up with 6 and 7.
- Meanwhile our defense slowly strangled them until the slept with the fishes, going from 9:41 of the first half to 19:16 of the second half, a period of more than 10 minutes without a single point. Matt Park and Jim Satalin commented that the Aztecs left the court at halftime looking stunned and depressed. They never did try to get anybody into the high post. We choked off their attempts to get to the basket, especially when Jesse Edwards with his 7-foot height and 10 foot reach. They wound up setting for three and were 3 for 20 at halftime. They padded their stats in garbage time but we really took them apart tonight.
- Kadari Richmond was a revelation, making two threes, including a really long one. If he starts hitting from there, watch out. He also had a wonder block, killing a fast break. His knees looked OK. He also had 2 rebs, 2 blocks and an assist. (We somehow shot 55% both from the field and from the arc but had fewer assists than a team shooting 36% and 27.5.)
- Alan Griffin screwed the pooch again but Robert Braswell was an upgrade, playing 25 minutes of outstanding defense and scoring 9 points with a couple of rebounds and a couple of blocks.
- Jesse Edwards played only 16 minutes but I thought it was his best game. He had Mitchell staring at his armpits, grabbed 5 rebounds and even scored a basket on a sweet move to the basket. He also had many times when he tipped balls to his teammates.
- Anybody want to ease JB into retirement now? Since 2003, he's 11-2 as an NCAA underdog. That's 84.6%)
- I’d spent a week listening to interviews with coaches, broadcasters and journalists from San Diego telling us how good San Diego State was and how they were going to use to show the rest of the country how good they are. It wasn’t quite arrogant, but they sounded as if they’d already won the game. “Wait ‘till you see our players!”. Turning them into Montana was fun.
