- It wasn’t the 1997 Florida State game. Even though the crowd was the same size, the players, coaches, fans and carrier Dome staff were into it. It would have been a sad thing to end the season with a first round NIT loss and that didn’t happen.
- We are now 17-3 this year in the Dome and 10-3 all-time in NIT Dome games. One was a loss to eventual champion Bradley in 1982. The second was that dismal Florida State game. the third was the 2008 UMASS game where we blew the 24 point lead. But we had a 24 point lead. Syracuse teams don’t like to be in the NIT but when they are, they are “invested” in it.
- Looking at the NIT bracket, there’s nobody there we can’t beat – or lose to. But with three Dome games we could get to New York and finally, after all these years, win this thing.
- Our greatest asset is something we haven’t bene able to fully use. This team can absolutely lock down games from the free throw line. It’s like having a great bullpen. But to get saves you need to get leads. We have been making miracle comebacks. We’ve had some games that were already decided going into the final minutes. We’ve rarely been protecting a narrow lead at the end of games. The last time was the Florida State game. In this game, we held off a comeback that almost put the game in about after a 22 point lead had shrunk to 7 points with 2:05 left. We went 10 for 11 from the line in that time. If we can get some leads on these NIT teams, we can win this thing.
- Andrew White still wants to win. He played like a guy who just loves playing the game, especially shooting the ball. He was 11 for 15, 7 for 9 from the arc and dropped in 34 points, easily the best player on the court. He’s the kind of guy who can carry a team on his back to a title, especially this title. He wants to end his college career in style and show those NBA scouts what he can do. He broke GMAC’s record for three pointers in a season with 109, (which JB described as “not relevant”).
- Taurean Thompson has a lot to work on but he sure can score. He was 5 for 6 and scored 12 points in 18 minutes. They had nobody who could cover him.
- They also had nobody who could cover Tyus Battle, who would line up a defender on the outside, 25 feet from the basket and blow by him to score 20 big points. He also had 4 assists and 3 steals. Don’t tell JB but he looked like he could be a point guard next year.
- Tyler Lydon had his fifth double- figure rebounding game in the last seven. In the two others, he had 9.
- Tyler Roberson had 7 rebounds in 22 minutes to go with 4 points, 3 assists a block and a steal. Our defense improved, (existed?) when he replaced Thompson.
- Frank Howard had a solid game with 3 points, 4 rebounds and a steal in 17 minutes. JB liked his defense.
- We shot the lights out at every spot: 64.5% on twos, 42.9% on threes and 82.1% on frees. If we keep doing that, we’ll be hard to beat.
