- I started the game in a sort of nirvana of low expectations, expecting not to be hurt by anything that happened because I didn’t think much of anything good would happen anyway. That ended at 7-0, although when Buddy missed those free throws I wondered. No need to wonder or worry. The Heels managed to get within 4 at 24-20. The rest of the half was an incredible 19-2 run, including 15 in a row to end the half that ended all suspense. There was no comeback of any sort in the second half and, frank the North Carolina players seemed to be playing out the string. - It reminded me of the first Georgia Tech game. We punched them early and kept the pressure on the whole game. We were Tyson Fury. They were Devonte Wilder.it was four ACC game we’ve won by 23 or more points. Only Duke has more, (6). Florida State, Louisville and Virginia have 2 between them. - We are 7-0 the second time we plays a team this season. They always used to say of Joe Louis that he was better the second time he fought anybody it was also our 7th conference win away from the Dome. Are we a really good team in disguise? - JB pointed out that getting killed on the boards was the big reason we’d lost to this school 9 times in a row. In Syracuse it was 29-39. In this game it was 38-42 25-22 in the first half, when the game was really decided. Bourama has a double-double at 12p 13r in minutes. Quincy Guerrier had 7p 9r in 18:45. Seven of his rebs came in the first half. Elijah added 7 more. - Our team got ripped for 92 points in the Dome and then got ripped on this board and elsewhere for their defensive limitations. The fact that a 28% three point shooting team hit 11 of 26 was credited to the defense. So let’s now credit the defense, including Buddy and Joe, who both played 35 minutes for holding them to 2 for 16 from three and 18 for 44 from two, as well as getting 11 steals and 3 blocked shots. - Steals: 11-0. Fast break points (against the most famous fast break team in the country): 15-2. - Elijah Hughes, in what may turn out to be his last collegiate game, came out strong, (again it seemed like the Georgia Tech game) and never let up, except to get his teammates involved in the second half. He would up with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. He drew four fouls, as well, with his patented arm waggling reaction to any contact. Hey, it works! - Marek Dolezaj didn’t have a Hughes game, getting into foul trouble again and winding up with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 0 assists., But he was a big part of the strong start and his ball handling helped solve the Tar Heel’s pressure in the second half. - Bourama Sidibe resumed his run of strong games to end the season. In addition to his double double he had 3 steals, 2 blocks and an assist. Garrison Brooks, who had 26 points and 14 rebounds in the first game, had 18 and 4 in this one, (most of the points coming long after the contest had been blown open). Bourama fouled 4 times but was fouled 4 times as well. - Quincy Guerrier showed his usual energy, getting those 7 points and 9 rebounds and drawing 3 fouls in half a game. - Buddy Boeheim got off to a dreadful start, missing all three free throws when he got fouled trying a trey at 7-0. But he wound up 7 of 12 and scored 17 points. And had 3 assists. - Joe Girard had only three points on a single trey. But he had 8 assists and 0 turnovers, despite the fact that the tar heels were pressing throughout the second half. He never allowed them to get anything going. - If this is our last game, it was quite a high note end a frustrating season on. It would also be the second time a season ended with a victory for Jim Boeheim as a head coach, the other being the 2003 national championship game, also against a Roy Williams team. (Jim was an assistant on our 1973 team that won an Eastern Regional consey.) - We made North Carolina cry. 18-14 (11-10) with ? to be done LET’S GO ORANGE!
