- We scored 30 points in the game’s first 18 minutes to take a 30-19 lead. Unfortunately, we scored 14 points in the next 15 minutes. We have a lot of guys who can shoot but we don’t really have any scoring options beyond shooting. (Even our upsides have a downside.) - Some individual players had some good numbers: Boruama Sidibie and Quincy Guerrier both had 9 rebounds, a total of 18 in combined 47 minutes. - Joe Girard, facing constant physical pressure, had 2 turnovers in 40 minutes. He also showed an ability to set his shot up with a dribble, even against an aggressive defender. - We had four double figure scorers to their 3. The problem is we played 6 players while they played 9. All 15 players scored but they had more players. - We out-shot them, 35.3% to 27.8% form three point range but they outshot us, 36 attempts to 17 and wound up with 4 more three pointers. Still, most of their shots were well defended by our players. - We held their star, 6-7 Landers Nolley, who was averaging 17.4ppg to 13 points on 1 for 11 three point shooting . But 5-10 Jalen Cone, who had been averaging 5.6ppg, hit 5 of 7 three pointers and scored 19 points. - We won the battle of the boards 34-33 and had two fewer turnovers, 9-11. But we needed to beat this team by more than that. - If we can lose close games, we can also win them. But as Jim Boeheim said in his rather exasperated presser, we haven’t played well enough to be in position to close out games. the question is: can we get better? Sure we can. Quincy can become a double-double machine, (He was 12 and 9 tonight). Edwards could press Sidibie into playing at his best all the time instead of some of the time or take some of his playing time and prove to be a better player. Joe Girard’s 50 ppg in high school could translate to 20ppg here, (he had that against ND and had 10 in the first half last night). The question is: will we have already accumulated too many losses to reach our goals before that happens? - I’ll give up on the team when they give up on themselves. That hasn’t happened yet. Not even close. 8-7 with 16+ to be done LET’S GO ORANGE!
