- We won. This game had UVA-UMBC look to it most of the way.
- My formula is that if 1-2 guys play well we lose. If 3-4 guys play well, we probably win. If 5 or more guys play well, we blow somebody out. We had four guys play well and a fifth play well in limited action and that proved enough- barely.
- The leader of the pack was Marek Dolezaj with 27 ‘net’ points, including 20 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals. He also was our center most of the game, taking on the aggressive 6-8 230 Hall Elias. The 9 assists are interesting because in his first three seasons he had the reputation of being an great passer, but not the stats, (1.5, 1.6 and 2.8 assists per game). In this game we saw what he could do in the middle of the defense, surround by three shooters and somebody who can score underneath.
- Our two small forwards, the “G-men”, Quincy Guerrier and Alan Griffin, both had double-doubles as they had to assume both forward positions with Dolezaj at center. Quincy used his strength to grab 12 boards and score 15 points. Griffin didn’t shoot that well, (5 for 14), but used his instinct and his jumping ability to get 12 rebounds as well. He scored 14 points thanks to 3, (of 9) three pointers, (Quincy was 0 for 3). Both men had 18NP.
- Buddy Boeheim led the team with 23 points, including 4 three pointers. He had 3 rebounds with 4 assists but also 4 turnovers. He had 17NP.
- Kadari Richmond played only 9 minutes but had 6 NP with 5 points, 3 rebounds and steal. He did have three fouls, indicating the adjustment had ahs to make to this level.
- We had 21 assists to 13 turnovers in this game and 20 takeovers.
- The team was tired but the pulled it out. They gave up 51 points in the first half and fell behind 50-63 with 16:01 left but gave up only 22 points in the last 16 minutes, allowing the offense to pull it out. Defense doesn’t win games but it gives your offense a chance to win them.
