- We wanted to take control of the game early and not let go of it. We wanted to win by a large margin and play a lot of people. We wanted to come out of it with no significant injuries. Check, Check and Check.
- We were actually a bit shaky in the early going, having to improvise to take advantage of two early turnovers but we got it done. What really put us in charge was that we had complete command of the line of scrimmage on both sides of the line. Our D-line was especially impressive. Wagner averaged 1.0 – yes 1.0 yards per carry (1.4 if you take out the sacks). And her I am complaining about our getting 3.5.
- We got only those two sacks but their QB was under pressure the whole game and the 3 interceptions were clearly aided by it.
- Meanwhile, our runners averaged 5.0, including 7.9 for Moe Neal and 5.3 for Jarveon Howard, who showed bowling ball power, the ability to pick his way through a crowded area and the burst to make a big play. We didn’t have to use Dungey as a runner as much. He did run 11 times for 44 yards.
- Dungey was 7 for 17 passing in the first game. In this game he was 23 for 32 218 yards and 5TDs in this game. Those are the numbers you expect from a top quarterback. More than that, he spread the ball around, both in the number of receivers who caught the ball (8) and where the caught the ball. It wasn’t just down the sideline. It was all over the field. Stretch the defense every which way like grandpa’s underwear and then hit them in the gaps that show up.
- Jamel Custis is the guy Dungey really loves to throw to. He had another good game with 5 catches for 41 yards and 2 scores, with more to come. But I enjoyed seeing Nykeim and Sharod Johnson and Taj Harris, who made a great play, spinning like a Dervish to score. The five TD passes were to 5 different guys, (Ravian Pierce also got one).
- Andre Cisco was amazing, jumping two routes to insert himself between what had bene an open receiver and the ball to grab it himself. He’s got 3 picks in his first two career games.
- At one point in the second half our secondary consisted of four freshmen. No, not these guys:
These guys: Trill Williams, Eric Coley, Andre Cisco and Ifeatu Melifonwu. The future, baby! I remember back in the 80’s, Coach Mac started four guys name Markus Paul, Chris Ingrahm, Jeff Mangrum and David Holmes and they grew up together. At first there were a lot of mistakes and bad plays. But they came together just dominated the other team’s passing game for the last 2-3 years they were together. I remember seeing probably as many coverage sacks in that era as I’ve seen since then. And I think these guys could be even better. They gave up some catches in the seams but they got to the ball in a flash, in positon to make tackles and the tackles they made could be used to illustrate a book. They have size, speed and athletic ability and they appear to already have good fundamentals.
- You aren’t going to get much in terms of kickoff returns in a game like this but I like that we averaged 17 yards a punt return- and it could have been more if Tyrell Richards hadn’t bumped into Sean Riley when the little guy had nothing but green turf in front of him if his teammate wasn’t in the way.
- Andre Szymt continued to hit ‘em down the middle, including the 50 yarder that made it 62-10. Dino wanted to find out what his range was and that’s about it- it made it over the crossbar by a couple of feet. We don’t really need anything longer than that- just hit the seams aon the 40 yarders and we’ll be fine.
- I was going to ask Coach on his next show why we can’t seem to score any more than we did in the Shafer era. I’m going to have to file that away for a while.
- Score as I type this: Samford 16 Florida State 7. I’ve no idea what the rest of that game will be like but I think we finally get the Noles next week.
2-0 with 10+ to go.
