- It sure was fun blowing out to a 34-7 halftime lead. I knew Western Michigan wasn’t Central Connecticut yet we were pounding them as if they were. Even the negative vibes me and my pal Accurater normally provide when we get together for a game didn’t seem to matter.
- Dungey played the offense- and Western Michigan’s defense – like a violin, cutting through the def4esne with his runs like a hot knife through butter. Lamar Jackson would have scored on a couple of those runs but they were still big plays for Eric. He was so pumped up he looked like Paganini, who played the violin so well, people thought it was witchcraft.
- Jamal Custis finally became Jamal Custis, the enormous target with speed we’ve been looking for three years. He left no doubt as to who was the number one option when our QBs go back to pass. He can get open, he can go up and get it and he can take it the distance. A quarterback’s dream.
- Our line was dominating up front, allowing backs to get past the line of scrimmage before contact, which they were able to initiate and protecting Dungey as he looked for Custis. Just what I envisioned from a now veteran line bolstered by the return of Aaron Roberts, the arrival of Koda Martin and redshirt freshman Dakota Davis.
- As usual, our running backs were overshadowed by Dungey but both Dante Strickland and Moe Neal scored twice. They got a lot of tough yardage when we needed it, especially Neal, who played the position most of the second half. But it was Strickland that grabbed the on-side kick and ran with it, basically sealing the game.
- DB turned linebacker Kielan Whitner got the huge interception that turned the game back in our favor, (with thanks to Chris Slayton for getting his big paw on the ball as it was being delivered). Kielan also made some bit tackles. The conversion seems successful. Congrats also to Andre Cisco who got the tipped ball pick that helped us off to the great start.
- D’Wayne Eskridge had 5 catches for 206 yards and two scores with another score set up by a 59 yarder until Trill Williams come into the game. He had 3 catches for 34 yards after that. Credit Williams for that and Coach Ward for making whatever other adjustments that produced that. Until then inevitable victory seemed to be turning into inevitable defeat.
-Andre Szmyt (“Schimdt”) was the surprise choice to do the placekicking and he looked good, sending seven extra points and 2 field goals, one from 43 yards, smoothly and confidently through the uprights. Of course he should have been 3 for 3 on field goals.
-Sterling Hofrichter didn’t get much of a chance to show off his powerful leg but a 43.8 yard punting average on four punts was just fine.
-It was no small thing that we got 141 yards from kick-off returns, (20.1 a shot) to only 55 for the broncos, (13.8). Matt Park said we lead the country in kickoff return yards by 300 ponders, Ken Ruff and Chris Elmore returned three kicks for 60 yards. Strickland’s 23 yard return was big. And yes, Shy Cullen had two for 21 yards a pop. WMU kept pooching the ball, somehow afraid of our deep guys, although I don’t know why. None of them has ever scored off a kick.
-We faced a difficult road opener and we won it. We’ve beaten a ranked team in the Dome in each of Dino’s first two years and Florida State figures to be the highest ranked team that will enter the Dome this year. If we can beat them we are likely to be 4-0 heading to Clemson. Will Gameday be there?
1-0 with 11+ to go.
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
