- It was the same script: a 20-2 first half run gave us a 19 point halftime lead. We then seemed to lose intensity and left Nova get back to within 11 points, then ripped off a 9-0 run and won easily. I wish JB had a better halftime speech but I’ll take it. - Our Philly players almost outscored Villanova in the first half, 23-24. They wound up with 33 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and a block in 56 minutes. - Scoop Jardine discovered his inner Pearl with that 35 footer at the end of the half. And I’m glad he got it or it might have gotten a little too close for comfort in the second half. - Dion Waiters was a monster in the first half with 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. He stepped on CJ Fair’s foot and twisted his ankle, (hazard of the profession when you are moving all the time and so are 9 other guys and nobody’s looking at anybody’s feet). Fortunately he came back in the second half with a couple of rim-rattling dunks. He was probably hurting but looked happy. - Matt Park reported that Rakeem Christmas “didn’t feel well and didn’t warm up very hard” but he had our first couple of baskets and wound up with 5 points and 3 rebounds in 8 minutes. - Fab Melo, despite a fancy dunk at the end of the game, didn’t have a big night but Baye Moussa Keita seems to be coming on strong after a slump and an injury. He didn’t attempt a shot in 19 minutes but had 7 rebounds, two blocks and went 2 for 2 from the line. We need him to be a force when he’s in there and he was tonight. - James Southerland, his stats still floating from some amazing early games, was more than just “a guy” tonight. He was our second leading scorer with 15 points in 19 minutes. And he did it from outside the arc, (2 for 5), inside it, (3 for 6) and the line (3 for 4). - We shot 5 for 18 from outside, forced only 14 turnovers, (we had just one less). Our leading scorer, Kris Joseph, was only 2 for 9 and had 8 points. Yet we beat Villanova on the road by 13 points. - We are now 18-0, the high-water-mark of last year. A dozen years ago we made it to 19-0, our best undefeated record ever. If we can beat providence Saturday we can match that and then try to go where no Orangeman has gone before Monday night against our old nemesis, Pittsburgh. If we can get by that one, who knows how far we can take this.
