- St. John’s lost to Duke 76-83 at Cameron indoor Stadium just a week ago by only 76-83 and earlier lost at Kentucky by 59-81. We beat them in what is supposed to be their place by 96-70.
- Of course it’s really our place. We’ve won 8 regular season games in a row there and 6 of the last 7 against St. John’s. We probably had more fans there than they did.
- Fab Melo came back strong with 14 points, a career high. He was 4 for 4 from the line, a nice change for SU big men. (Remember when we first saw him in that long U-Tube clip?) He had only 4 rebounds and was credited with only 2 blocks but surely had more than that. He altered many more shots and drives and allowed his teammates to play aggressively on defense. We didn’t get a lot of steals and turnovers but St. John’s shot only 16 for 42 inside the arc while we shot 32 for 49. Ball game.
- Fab had 14 points, as did Dion Waiters and CJ Fair. Kris Joseph and Michael Carter-Williams had 13. A center, two forwards and two guards all within 13-14 points. And five other guys also scored between 4-7 points. A total of 5 guys scored for St. Johns, half as many.
- After being slammed on the boards several times in recent games, we did the slamming with 42 rebounds to 31. Jardine, Triche and Waiters totaled 1 rebound vs. West Virginia. They got 8 in this game and MCW added 4 more.
- Rakeem Christmas, after a good game vs. Cincinnati and then a terrible one vs. West Virginia came back strong with 4 points, 7 rebounds and two blocks. It’s nice to have the luxury of having three big men again. We won’t be seeing CJ at center the rest of the way.
- We weren’t hitting well from outside the arc, (except for MCW) so several players started looking for medium range jump shots and driving to the basket. The medium range jump shot is still the deadliest weapon in basketball. A two point shot that goes in counts more than a three pointer that doesn’t. And you have to maneuver to get open within the arc. The defense has to follow you around to guard you and that opens up other options more than long range jumpers do.
23-1 and 16 to be done….. Impossible is nothing!!!!
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
