- Two thirds of the way through “The Week That Was”, (6 days, anyway), and we are 2-0. This was the stretch we’ve worried about all year. If we can win Monday night, (a big IF), running the table for the rest of the regular season looks real possible. 30-1, baby!!! A Murray State type record but in the Big East.
- We’ve been operating in low gear for weeks. We’ve had a great record but had to struggle to win every game. This game was a close game until the final burst but for once our offense was in high gear. We hadn’t hit 40% of our three pointers in any game since the Marquette game on January 7th. In this game we went 10 for 16 and it might have been 11 for 16 without a Melo goal-tend. CJ Fair followed up a 2 for 10 game with a 6-8 game, mostly medium range jump shots. Dion Waiters followed up a 3 for 12 game with a 7 for 10 game. Scoop Jardine, the guy who couldn’t shoot when he first came here, was 8 for 9, including 4 for 4 from three point land. And this was against the #1 three point percentage defense in the Big East. These games are a lot easier if you put the ball into the basket. I have a feeling getting points for doing that was one of the first things Dr. Naismith came up with. It was one of his best ideas.
- We don’t need to dominate the boards but we need to be competitive on them. Today we were, winning the rebound battle 31-29 and getting 23 defensive rebounds against a team with some future NBA types on the front line. CJ Fair had an amazing game, getting 11 of those defensive rebounds and 12 overall. This was in a game with 60 rebounds to be had. Otto Porter was the leading rebounded in the Georgetown game with 13- of 87. CJ developed a strategy of moving to the baseline while bigger players were battling for the ball under the basket and swiping the ball from them. Or maybe out big guy realized CJ was right there and just pushed the ball in his direction. Whatever. It worked.
- The Philadelphia kids- Scoop and Dion, had their best combined game together, scoring 39 points on incredible 15 for 19 shooting, (5 of 6 from outside), dishing 10 assists to 3 turnovers and making 3 steals. UCONN score 6 straight to make it 63-61 with 6:26 left. A Jardine 3, and another Jardine 3, a three point play by Waiters, a lay-up from Jardine, a jumper from Waiters, a lay-up by Dion and another Jardine 3 and we had a 81-62 lead, game over. An 18-1 run from Uncle Scoop and his nephew. When those guys play like that, I don’t see anybody beating us.
- Kris Joseph didn’t have to be “the Dude” this time but had a solid game with 15 points. He was 3 for 4 from three point range, making him 9 for 15 in these last two games, (60%).
- Brandon Triche did not have a good game but he had a great play, dribbling past a smaller defender, (Boatwright?), with a behind the back move and then squaring himself to hit a wide open jumper from the top of the key. This wasn’t his night but he’s there if we need him.
- Yeah, I Know Kemba wasn’t there and this team has been in a slump but anytime you can beat the defending national champions and do it in style, it’s been a good day.
- 25-1: Where no Syracuse team had ever gone before. The sky is the limit.
25-1 and 14 to be done….. Impossible is nothing!!!!
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
