- This was Michael Carter- Williams’ best game so far. He filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals but the big thing is that he took over when the team was struggling midway through the second half. Princeton had scored 8 points in a row to close to 45-39 and SU’s control of the game was threatened. MCW went to the dribble drive into the high post, causing the Tiger’s defense to collapse toward him and opening up the pass to the baseline. The result was a Christmas dunk, a Triche lay-up, a Keita lay-up and Fair lay-up that made it 53-39. SU was back in control and the laded mounted from there to the 73-53 final.

- Every game somebody decides to play out of his mind. In this game it was James Southerland, who made 5 first-half steals and then started hitting shots, 4 for 6 from three point range and 7 for 11 overall, (and 4 for 4 from the foul line) for a game-leading 22 points. Whose turn to go off like that is it next time? We’ve got 9 guys who can do it.

- Rakeem Christmas was 5/6 from the field, including a nifty turn-around jump shot. He’s already a much more complete player than last and seems comfortable at either forward or center.

- CJ Fair started becoming productive again with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Creating his offense off the dribble-drive wasn’t working for him so he went back to simply being in the right place at the right time, which is clearly his game. He’s better off not trying to be a “star” and just being a basketball player.

- Baye Moussa Keita had the block of the year, following Tiger star Ian Hummer on a fast-break and swatting a dunk attempt away at the last nano-second. The play got better when Southerland scored a wild lay-up one the other end, converting a three point play.

- DaJuan Coleman played much better with 7 points 6 rebounds and 3 steals. He didn’t do any back-to-the basket stuff, just catch and shoot, rebound and follow. He’ll be able to do more than that as his college-level skills develop but right now he can help us more with the basic stuff. He had only one assist but I like his passing. That one assist came on a play where he directed Troche to run through and appointing to the basket and Coleman hit him with a perfect pass for the lay-up.

- We made an amazing 19 steals in this game, basically every one a literal steal from the Princeton player’s hands. Many were the result of double-teams. It disrupted the famous “Princeton” offense through much of the first half and down the stretch as the Orange pulled away. Everyone was in on the act. Southerland had 5, MCW 4, Triche 3, Coleman 3, Fair 2 and Cooney and Keita one each.

- This win is the type that could look better and better as the season goes along. Princeton started 1-5 last year and then went 19-7.

3-0 and here we go!

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
