- Once again we pulled out a tough Big East road game with our defense. With 4:25 left in the first half, Providence was ahead 24-33. With 1:11 left, we were up 64-55, 40-22 run during which we had trouble making any kind of jump shot. Then we held on to win. Bryce Cotton went off, (and basically undefended) throughout much of the first half, hitting five threes and a lay-up for 17 points on 6 for 6 shooting in the first 12:12. He made one basket- a lay-up the rest of the game.
- Like a pitcher finding ways to win without his best stuff, we found a way to score points even when we couldn’t shot the ball. Michael Carter-Williams has had better games statistically, (although there’s nothing wrong with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals), but this was his best game as a floor general, getting us into some offensive set where we could score and finding Rakeem Christmas on a series of pick and roll plays that got us some key baskets as we made to comeback and finally took the lead.
- Christmas had his career best game. Besides scoring a career-high 15 points he had 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. He was very active in the paint, challenging shots and pulling down rebounds. And we’ll see more of that pick and roll.
- We picked a great night to finally make our free throws. CJ Fair made 9 of 10 and led the team with 23 points. (He also had 11 rebounds and four blocks). But his teammates did even better, going 8 for 8. You can get a lead but you close the game from the foul line, just like a baseball team closes it from the bullpen.
15-1 and fifteen to be done! (and then some!)
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
