- For the second straight week, we got the job done. Good teams play well no matter who they are playing and when they are playing teams they are a lot better than, they beat them by a lot. That’s what we did.
- Terrel Hunt continued to show why he was out quarterback and should have been all along. He was mobile, versatile and creative. He throws a nice, catchable ball. He sees the whole field and leads his receivers rather than throwing to spots. He can run the ball and can use his feet to buy time. His fellow players have a lot of confidence in him and he plays with confidence in himself. What more do you want? So far, as a passer, he’s 33 for 43, (77%) for 468 yards, 7TDs and no interceptions. Hunt’s first thirteen possessions this season resulted in 12 touchdowns and a field goal. That’s pretty good.
- And it was nice to see Drew Allen come in and direct a scoring drive. When have we ever been in better shape at back-up QB?
- The best scoring drive was the one just before the half . We’d blown out to a 35-10 lead, then had an amazing stand in which we endured 8 plays starting from our own 8 yard line without allowing a score, then, on the 9th play, blocked the field goal. Hunt finally had a non-scoring possession thanks to some conservative play calling. Tulane the drove 59 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-17 with 1:44 left in the half- and they would get the second half kick-off. That’s not a big lead on modern college football, (Pitt today had a 27-7 lead over Duke and held on to win by 58-55). You’ve got to close the deal. We did with a 9 play 85 yard drive, (after George had unwisely come out from four yards deep on the kick-off), ending in Jerome Smith’s determined touchdown run with 7 seconds left to make it 42-17 and put us back in control of the situation. That’s winning football.
- Six guys carried the ball for at 3.8 yards a crack, (the lowest average was Jerome Smith’s), and 11 guys caught passes. We are using everybody and the whole field.
- But the key to the game was the three blocked kicks we got. We haven’t blocked a kick in I don’t know how long. It’s a huge play that can set your offense up for easy scores, (2 in this game) or even produce the score themselves. Shafer said after the game that they felt they could block some kicks in this game and they really went after it. Keep it coming!
- Riley Dixon is turning into quite a weapon as a punter. He doesn’t just boom it, (he did average 43.8 yards on 4 punts but he’s the first one we’ve had in a long time who could aim his ball to a certain spot or use a certain trajectory to achieve maximum results. And Ryan Norton seems to be settling in as a placekicker, perfect on 7XPs and 1FG.
- Our defense had a lousy tackling first half but they fixed it and shut out the Green Wave in the second half. Kudos to Joe’s kid Nick Montana, who took some horrendous hits and kept coming back in a losing effort. We kept the pressure on him all the time. And we finally started to bat down some passes, as had been done to us when Allen was in there. Isaiah Johnson got a couple of them.
- After Northwestern we were -3 on turnovers for the year. We are now +2.
- I spent last year asking who Clay “No Statistics Available” Cleveland was. He was always part of the starting line-=up but rarely used, a blocking fullback. He’s made his presence felt this year, never more so than today when he caught the first two TD passes of his career and almost got a third. He has some stats now.
- We got alotta guys who can kick your butt!
2-2 with 8 (or 9) to do
LET’S GO ORANGE!
Go to the Clemson game and come home hoarse!
