- We won. Like Coach Mac used to say. Every victory over a major college team is golden. We’ve looked awful at times this year but are somehow 4-4 and 2-2 in conference with a beatable opponent on the road next week and two home games left. A bowl game is far from impossible. - We got back to running the ball, which is what we do best. Remember the NC State game when we were supposed to be teaching these southerners what northern, smash-mouth football is all about? In the second half of this one we got back to doing that after 6 quarters in which we had gained 290 yards and scored no points trying to beat teams with Terrel Hunt’s passes. Hunt can pass effectively if we first run effectively, including Hunt’s own running. I just hope the coaches remember that. - We also went back to doing what we do best on defense- the 4-3 instead of a 3-4 and get into their backfield to mess things up. We stuffed the run, holding them to 40 yards and had Tanner Price running for his life, (only two official sacks but dozens of hurries that led to a 22 for 54 day with the longest completion being for 14 yards. We went from giving up 56 points to our second shut-out of the season. - We’ve been beaten badly three times this year. Northwestern and Clemson did it through the air: Georgia tech with their triple option. We won’t see a TO team again unless it’s in a bowl. In this game, I kept looking at the secondary rather than the line or the backfield and I didn’t see open receivers. In fact a lot of those sacks and hurries were due to good coverage. Price kept looking for open receivers and not finding them. - Nice to see Brisley Estime have a bit of a break-out game with 9 receptions for 62 yards and a score. Also nice to see him and Ashton Broyld out there at the same time. We need all the play makers on the field we can get although it was strange that we never did get the ball to Ashton. I’d still like to see the “Salt Badger” get the kick-off return spot vacated by George Morris’ injury. - We get on Jarrod West a lot but he caught a 42 yard pass and THREW a touchdown pass to Brisley Estime. I would think Ashton would have been a better choice but Jarrod uncorked a good one. - We also get on prince-Tyson Gulley a lot for not being as big and strong as Jerome Smith but he sure looked fast on that 66 yarder. If we can block for these guys, they all look good. - But everything gets better when we feed #45 the ball. - Riley Dixon continues to give us excellent punting, which was at a premium in a game like this. He can boom it when he needs to and can sky it or angle it as well. When he wants to sky it, he catches and holds the ball in his finger-tips, dangling down towards the ground. It’s scarey but it works. Riley might turn out to be the best punter we’ve had because of his versatility. - Jay Bromley has become Art Jones. - Our two freshman ends, Isaiah Johnson and RonThompson are really going to be something together. They are big, (both 6-4 and about 270) and very mobile and athletic. Johnson had a huge game with an acrobatic interception of a pass he’d batted into the air and a sack. Thompson is going to have games like that, too. - Dyshawn Davis is back and made some big and hard tackles on those quick outs that the Deacons, 9and everybody else these days) are in love with. Cam Lynch spent the afternoon in the Deac’s backfield. He might as well have been in their huddle. Durrell Eskridge had a good game and I saw a lot of Wayne Morgan, too. We seem to be using the younger guys in the secondary more and it’s a good thing. 4-4 with 4 (or 5) more LET’S GO ORANGE!
