- They did it! The best moment was at the very end when the whole team came streaming out on the field. They did it!
- You gotta love Scott Shafer. In his press conference after the game, he addressed the issue of letting BC score at the end so we could have more time to try and get a touchdown and try for two. “Hell, no! what kind of message does that send to the kids!”.
- I want’ sure what the message was when we went for a field goal with a shaky kicker, down 4 with five minutes left. But hey, It worked!
- In a game of heroes, he’s one we need to remember: Brandon reddish, who forced Mike Naples out of bounds at the SU 4 before the Eagles’ field goal that made it. That saved us 40 seconds and we scored with 6 seconds left on the clock.
- Habemus Quarterbackum! The coaches have been talking about how much Terrel Hunt has improved. This was break out game against a significant team, not a walk-over against an over-matched opponent. In this game Terrel completed 29 of 43 passes (67%) for 270 yards, 2 scores and 1 interception. He also ran for 90 on 17 carries and scored a touchdown. He effectively checked off his receivers. His passes had zip and touch. He’s become the “other” running back I always bemoan the loss of in modern football. He’s basically playing both quarterback and halfback at the same time. He took a lot of shots, (especially when we used the “empty” backfield but kept on ticking. But the most impressive thing is that he came back from that one interception, which seemed to have lost the game to lead us on an 80 yard drive in the last two minutes to the winning touchdown. When did we last have a real “two minute offense”? Life is good when you’ve got yourself a quarterback.
- Hunt completed passes to 10 different receivers, including himself, (Note to quarterbacks: if you have a chance to catch the ball, don’t.) Among them was Alvin Cornelius, who led the team with 7 catches for 81 yards and Quinta Funderburke, who caught a 28 yarder. Where were those guys all season?
- Heisman Trophy candidate Andre Williams’ afternoon: 9 carries. -2, -1, 2, 26TD, -4, 5, -1, -1, 5. Injury. Spectator. 9 carries for 29 yards after games of 295, 339 and 263. Coaches Shafer and Bullough came up with a 4-4-3 defense that totally stuffed Williams except for one play when we didn’t get set for the snap. We may have blown the Heisman for Andre but they will likely give it to somebody else in the conference so that’s OK. (With us.)
- Overall, we out-rushed a team that lives by the run, 210—191 and threw for another 270 yards for a total of 480 yards total offense, 30 first downs and, most importantly, 34 points. Whoever we play in a bowl game will be facing a complete football team.
- One of the most encouraging things is how this team improved as the season went on. Our quarterback has improved. Our defense, especially in the backfield, has improved. Ryan Norton has improved, (at least in this game). We aren’t making all the mistakes we had been making in penalties and turnovers. That’s the best thing about having a bowl game to go to. This team is just coming into its own.
- Other good things: all those extra practices and sending potential recruits the message that they can come to Syracuse, play exciting football and win games in this conference and go to bowl games.
- And we did it in OUR uniforms. It’s been a good week to wear Orange.
