- Well, we got to 4-0 in basketball. That’s more than we did in football.
- We jumped right on an inferior opponent and took them right out of the game. They had a couple of second half runs but all they did was make it respectable. That’s what you have to do with an inferior team.
- As Jim Boeheim said, not too many teams are going to beat us when we hit 14 three pointers.
- Michael Gbinije was en fuego, hitting 9 of 11 shots overall and 6 of 8 three pointers for 26 points, one short of his career high, which I think he will exceed this year, maybe multiple times. He’s currently averaging 20.3ppf. He can also fill up a stat sheet: 3 rebounds 4 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. I have him with 29 “net points”.
- His fellow senior, Trevor Cooney, also had a big game: 19 points on 8 for 17 shooting. Interestingly he was a pedestrian 3 for 8 from the arc. He got as high as 19 points by going 5 for 9 on his drives to the basket. He also had 5 assists and 3 rebounds. He’s a much better player when he’s playing the whole and not typecast as an outside gunner.
- But many felt the MVP was freshmen Tyler Lydon who seems to get better with each game. This was his best yet. He scored 18 points on 7 for 10 shooting, including a couple of threes. And had 8 rebounds, 6 blocks and two steals. I hate to say it but he could be getting some national attention if he plays that well in this tournament before ESPN’s top announcing crew. More and more people will know about Tyler Lydon and then…But let’s enjoy the ride while he’s here.
- Mal Richardson, (I’m already tired of typing out that “achi”: it looks like “mariachi” to me anyway), had a poor first half, limited to seven minutes by foul trouble. But he saved our bacon in the second half, ending was had been an 0-12 run with a trey and then a two point jumper. He wound up with 12 points- 8 in the second half, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
- DaJuan Coleman had his most aggressive game, blocking 3 shots and pulling down 7 rebounds. He also scored on a deft floater while driving to the paint to give us the lead we never relinquished. Maybe the most impressive thing was 3 assists. He fed Gbinije for his first trey to get the first half roll going and helped turn the tide back in our favor by getting the ball to Richardson for his two pointer and feeding Gbinije again for a lay-up. DC hasn’t played enough to show off what I thought was the most remarkable thing about him in high school: his ability to pass. Actually, the pass he is best at is the one that launches a fast break I’ve seen him hit a streaking player going toward the basket on the other end with an outlet pass. If he can stay healthy, play well enough stay in the game and get some rebounds, we’ll see some of that. And this team has guys who can streak to the basket.
4-0 and 28 to go…
