- When you analyze a loss, you need to separate the deficits into those that are obviously permanent problems and those that were problems just in this game, or occasionally at worst.
- Mal Richardson and Trevor Cooney going 1 for 19 will not be a permanent problem. Neither will two guys who are worse shooters than them going 8 for 11, mostly from NBA range. Or Tyler Roberson going 1 for 8 from the line. He may not be very good but he was 17 for 29 coming in, (59%). If the shooting had been normal, we would like have won this game and we’d all be feeling a lot better, despite continuing concerns over rebounding, interior defense and scoring, lack of appoint guard, etc. Perhaps we should feel that way anyway.
- We were very effective in the press at the end of the game, winding up with 13 steals and 13 points off turnovers. Maybe the light will go on and Mike will realize that we need to use the press as a proactive weapon, rather than a desperation measure. When the cat’s away… And maybe if it works, the cat will use it, too. Come out in the press get a lead and then settle back in the zone when you need a rest. Then hit them with it again when they aren’t expecting it.
- Michael Gbinije hasn’t had a bad game yet. 21 points on 64% shooting, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.
- Tyler Lydon put up some good numbers: 11 points, 10 rebounds, a steal and a block. I still think our offense would work much better going through him in the high post.
- Trevor Cooney did manage 11 points and 5 assists to go with 3 steals.
- Richardson played a highly imperfect game but did score 15 points with 5 rebounds and 4 steals.
- We have good players but too many are of a similar type. We have to find a way of playing that takes advantage of their skills and allows us to overcome their weaknesses. We have three more games to figure out how to do that.
7-3 with 21+ to go…
