The Varsity in Atlanta

Typical college dive greasy spoon. Not that that's bad. Grabbed lunch there once.

If you go this weekend to the Georgia version of the Varsity be prepared to be disappointed. Bascally it's bland Hot Dogs and Burgers. If you do go the lines are long on game day so be prepared. I do recommend the onion rings and of course the ORANGE drink!

I was there 30 years ago. Nothing special. Kind of like the ATL version of Geno's or Pat's.

One of those places you should definitely go to when you're in town, but it's only to say you went. A&W is better.

I think you're giving the ATL version of varsity way too much credit on that comparison. The only reason I can think of to go to Varsity is to be able to say you've been to the biggest drive in - or whatever they're billed as - the food and atmosphere are terrible. I really enjoyed the cheesesteak at Pat's.

The Varsity is fun once in a while. The only thing that's excellent though is the onion rings. Worth a visit for the onion rings.

If you are from NY, stay away from the hot dogs for sure...no joy there. I would go with a double chili cheeseburger or two (they are small). The chili is a basic meat sauce, no beans or anything. Ask for onions or you wont get them, put mustard on it, and it's a passable to enjoyable dive meal depending on how much you like that kind of thing. I would rather eat that than say a McDonalds or Burger King hamburger, but it's not particularly good other than the experience of it, the location to GT, and the onion rings.

the best pizza in atlanta is antico's - and that is not a question, nor up for debate. bring your own wine. save room for gelato.

stop by siracusas in smyrna. owned by 2 guys from cuse. great guys. lotta cuse people there all the time. bocce courts. they are having a bus leave at 930 heading down to game. call ahead to see if any space available.

as far as the varsity... if you want some atl culture - skip the varsity and go to centennial olympic park area. hit up coke museum and aquarium with the kids. After it gets dark, go to the highlands for some drinks and then to the clermont lounge as it gets later (dont bring the kids).

For those going down, I do recommend a visit to the World of Coke, just bring your spare bladder, and some insulin.

And make sure to sample the Beverly.

My dad went to Georgia Tech in the 50s, and his one suggestion was to go to the "Varsity Grill". I assume this is the same place.
